Egg farts. Will they ever stop or is this my life now? šŸ˜†

This is my first time doing keto, and I’m two weeks in. I’ve had an extremely bad time with gas, and I don’t have to question the cause, because you’d think there was a plate of eggs cooked in butter sitting near my butt when I fart. So I guess it could be worse, because eggs and butter is not the worst smell that could emit from there, but still…
Did anyone else have/still have this problem? And is there any food you added that countered it?

Never had the issue.

Gut bugs making gas:

  1. ā€œā€¦ The smell of flatulence is one of its most common characteristics, and it’s related to sulfur, or hydrogen sulphide, being released by bacterial fermentation in your gut as it digests food. Sulfur is an almighty stinky gas and can be produced in excess in the digestive system in response to certain types of food, particularly cruciferous vegetables. If your farts are smelling like ā€œrotten eggs,ā€ that scent is generally due to hydrogen sulfide, a gas that’s created when your body breaks down foods with sulfur in them, like the aforementioned vegetables and beans above. If you’re also noticing that your farts are particularly smelly — but not exactly ā€œeggyā€ — it may also be due to your excessive consumption of meat. ā€¦ā€ā€¦More.
  1. ā€œā€¦It is notable that the ratio of Firmicutes to Bacteroidetes is higher in obese than in lean humans. Moreover, this proportion decreases with weight loss on a low-calorie diet [28]. This means that in addition to the effect of excess calories per se, a high-calorie diet predisposes to obesity through microbiota modulation, which manifests by the increased F/B ratio. Hence, the F/B ratio may also be considered a useful biomarker of obesity. ā€¦ā€ …More

The number of eggs I have eaten over the last 4 years is only eclipsed by the number of chicken wings they sell at Wingstop and Buffalo Wild Wings but I have never had this problem. In fact, since I started doing keto and IF, my gas has severely decreased. It was common for me to walk around the house farting… now I rarely do. You are you though and your biochemistry may be different in the same way that beans are a major source for some but for others, not so much.

Are you coming from a fairly high carb diet beforehand? I’m guessing that the farts are caused by changes in your gut microbiome with the carb feeders dying off being replaced by nice healthy fat feeders…
I’m going through something vaguely similar in my transition to a more carnivore based diet at the moment… along with some real stinkers (so bad they fill the whole house) I also have had a couple of bouts of the ā€œrunsā€ as well.

My diet was rather high in carbs before, so if that is a common issue in changing over, that may be the cause. I also didn’t typically eat a lot of dairy, but have since added it of course with cheese, Greek yogurt, and heavy cream. I also strive to get enough fiber, and may be overdoing it. I’ll begin counting my fiber intake to find out. From what I’ve read all of these things can cause gas issues. And for all I know it could be a little of everything based on the severity of it.
Background: my doctor suggested keto for epilepsy, so she is obviously supportive of the diet and should be able to help me get on track with my macros and digestive issues.

I wouldn’t stress too much about fibre… its still quite an unknown quantity… I have very little at the moment and don’t seem to suffer… well right at the moment exactly the opposite!

Most likely a gut bug shift or mild dysbiosis…my husband used to get them horribly, along with egg burps which actually seem worse. They usually go away on their own.

Some more; Fart Facts (the stinky hydrogen sulphide eggy ones):

ā€ā€¦Most of the time your farts are just inconvenient but not something to necessarily get riled up about. In fact, they might even be protective in some instances! That’s right — your farts might be a clue that your ā€œgut bugsā€ are well-fed and working hard, and that your diet is a mostly healthy one. Diets high in fiber-rich foods after all tend to cause gas, but they also feed good bacteria that make up your immune system and protect you from various diseases, like heart disease, cancer, diabetes and obesity. (7)

Aside from being a sign that your eating plenty of fiber, gases within your farts might even be beneficial. While this isn’t exactly a proven fact yet, there’s some early evidence suggesting that farts offer protection against diseases like cancer because of the specific gases they contain.

Farts contain hydrogen sulphide, a gas produced by certain natural bodily processes and needed as part of cellular functions. While I wouldn’t necessarily go smelling yours, or anyone else’s, farts just yet, it’s possible that inhaling hydrogen sulphide (yes, from your very own farts!) in small doses might help protect cells’ mitochondria and stop cellular damage at some level. Maybe you are lactose intolerant. If you have upped your dairy a significant amount, maybe that is causing the gas.

I used to have this problem with eggs. But eventually learned that having veg with the eggs. or cheese. or anything really, just so it wasn’t just eggs on the plate, helped a lot.

I used to get this before keto for two reasons: I ate dairy (I’m lactose intolerant) or I ate a lot of meat, it doesnĀ“t happen with meat since I went keto and it happened a few days ago when I ate a lot of dairy
