EATING OUT - suggestions please

Hi everyone -
My son and fiance invited us to go out for his birthday tonight at FAMOUS DAVES. I have never been there, so checked out their online menu. I’d really like to order ribs - but am sure their sauce is full of sugar. Their description under baby backed ribs says:
Original style with Dave’s own rib rub then sauced with Sweet & Zesty® and a touch of honey; or Memphis-style, rubbed with a secret recipe of herbs and spices, hit with a vinegar mop and served naked.
The naked one sounds like a good choice - but don’t know what is in their secret recipe of herbs and spices - do they count sugar/brown sugar as a spice? Does anyone know? Or does anyone have keto friendly suggestions for that restaurant? Or should I opt for a cheeseburger w/out bun and steamed broccoli/butter? Any feedback would be appreciated!! Thanks!

Yes, avoid the barbecue sauce and all the deep fried foods.

You’ll probably be ok with the naked version, but you can check out the specific nutritional information here:

Looks like all of their rubs and sauces contain sugar pretty high up on the ingredients lists (and many other things as well). It might be worth calling ahead and seeing if they would just BBQ some meat for you without the sauce or rub–maybe just some salt and pepper.

Thanks for the link - I’ll check it out!

Rather than all that trouble - (will probably be a busy night for them) I’ll probably order the cheeseburger. Thank you! You guys rock! don’t know if I would have found the ingredient link as shared by Brendan.

I’ve eaten there before and got the chicken Caesar without croutons. I just looked at the nutrition link that @djindy shared and looks like that has 25 grams of carbs with 7 grams of fiber. I’m assuming a lot of those carbs are from the croutons though.

Good suggestion too!
I’m definitely not going with ribs - here’s a list of ingredients in their “rib rub”:
Rib Rub (salt, sugar, refinery syrup, monosodium glutamate, paprika, hydrolyzed corn, soy, and wheat protein, spices, onion powder, soybean oil, garlic powder, molasses, extractives of paprika, natural flavor, maple syrup, spice extractives, caramel color, vanilla extract, and not more than 2% silicon dioxide added to prevent caking)

Looks like their burger spices have sugar in them too. Maybe I can order the burger with only salt & pepper…
I only see ingredients - where do you see carbs & fiber?

It kinda makes me sick the way companies add sugar to EVERYTHING!

I’d get the chicken salad, with no croutons or salad dressing and ask the waiter for a bowl of melted butter to pour all over the dish.

Eating out can be a minefield. I was recently going to Swiss Chalet (a canadian roast chicken place), and when glancing at the menu ahead of time, I had decided that the “sauteed mushrooms” sounding like a good side. I mean mushrooms, sauteed in butter, would be low carb, right? Then I checked their nutritional info, and a side order of sauteed mushrooms had 30 (THIRTY!!!) grams of carbs. WTF?

Either one (or two) reasons. Using cornstarch to create a transparent, glistening glaze. Or, adding white sugar to sweeten the sautéed vegetables.

It’s easy to spot the cornstarch trick (the glaze is obvious). But, the adding of sugar is difficult to detect.

I have to admit, whenever I travel to the U.S. the sweetness of the food is quite profound and takes a while to adjust. I always come home craving food in or as close to its raw state.

Sad, isnt it Kate?!?! Accounts for all the obese Americans. I live in Indiana, and weekend grocery shopping can make me so sad to see all the ppl that could use some help w/ weight loss.

What’s more sad, is that of course, the U.S. isn’t alone. I think we’d be a close second these days.

(softail925) #15

Where are you from, Kate?

Melbourne, Australia. :sunglasses:

The dry rub and the burger seasoning might have sugar, but it shouldn’t be enough to kick you out of ketosis.

And MSG, aaaghhh.

I think the cheeseburger idea is better. One of my favorite “out” meals is a cheese burger, no bun, and side salad. Dump the burger on the salad and its a great meal. Another favorite - naked wings. Ribs are great if you can get them without rub or sauce - lots of places I’ve been to will gladly comply. And there’s always a steak and veggie side. The simpler I eat, the better I do.

I know this is an old thread but I’d do like Dr. Fung suggests about special events — eat what makes you happy and just be prepared to fast for a couple of days later to rid yourself of the excess glycogen. Fretting over what to eat will make you miserable and unwilling to eat healthy later.

My wife and I eat out every couple of weeks or so and I just eat what I want and then fast later. Makes life and “dieting” easier. But I don’t pig out.
