Eating candy that's less than 10 carbs?

So I have been on again off again keto for about 2 months (I know it’s not ideal but I truly didn’t have a choice) and have lost 12 pounds, but for the past 2 weeks I’ve been thinking, if I only need to eat less than 20 carbs I could have some of this and some of that as long as it doesn’t exceed it, is this wrong?

For example an Oreo cookie has about 6 carbs, could I eat it?
I’m not on this diet to eat like only whole foods and all that, I’m merely here to lose weight.

I guess my question is are there “long” term side effects to this? If I eat that cookie will I get kicked out of ketosis and have to wait another week before I’m back in it?

The only problem I can see is that the fructose half of the sugar (the other half is glucose) is possibly addictive, and in quantity it definitely causes problems in your liver. If you can really keep your carbohydrate under 20 g, however, go for it.

If you can eat only 1 Oreo, you are a better person than I am! In theory what you suggest may work, however you are not considering the insulin response. Sure the cookie may only be 6 carbs, but the insulin response will be massive compared to the 6 carbs of celery, for example. The cookie dumps all of its sugar very quickly, as opposed to the celery which takes longer to digest and thereby gives a much reduced insulin response.
Remember, one of the things that the keto diet is trying to accomplish is control of insulin. Oreos are not going to do that for you. Even if you only eat 1.
If you choose to eat an Oreo, the Keto Police aren’t going to show up and haul you off the the Carb dungeon, but you probably aren’t helping yourself get to your goals. And only you can define what those are.
If you choose to test your theory, Good luck… let us know how it turns out…

It’s a slippery slope that leads to cheating more. I would commit to the diet completely based on approved and banned foods.

Ah ha! Give hard core keto some time. The addictive taste of fat will replace the need for sugar. The current high sugar, high refined carb state is the direct result of removing evil fats from our diets. Fat tastes GRRRRRREAAAAT. when they took the fat out, the remaining food tasted like :poop:, so sugar was added to make the food edible again.

I used to eat ice-cream by the pint (or 2). Ben & Jerry & me. Now, I don’t have it, I don’t miss it, I don’t want it. But don’t tell me to stop eating bacon, blue cheese dressing, mayo, fatty steaks, chicken wings, and all the other goodness that is keto friendly.

You too may find yourself gravitating toward fat and away from sugar.

You can eat anything you want. Doesn’t mean your body is going to like it and behave.

Are Oreos a trigger food? If so then probably best not to eat them. If you want to lose weight and keep it off, getting rid of sugar is a great place to start.

You could be better off eating lentils, beets, and other higher carb veggies and legumes than a sugar cookie.

When we move in to and out of ketosis is a very individualized thing. After eating this way for over 2 yrs. now, I can eat something that is high carb and not even drop below nutritional ketosis levels. I use a breathalyzer to monitor if I have done something I think might mess me up. I don’t do that often because I love the lower carb items in my WOE. Things that use to tempt me are not even good tasting now. So I rarely eat a day with over 50 carbs. I focus on what I can have, not what I can’t. Works beautifully for me.

Good luck on sorting yourself out.
