Has anyone heard of the BodPod, or heard of using air displacement to figure out % body fat? A couple of gyms near me offer this for $50. Or I could get a DXA scan for $90. I already have an impedance scale that gives me a % body fat number. But it’s way off from what I get with calipers. It’s consistent day to day, but I doubt it’s accuracy.
DXA vs BodPod vs. impedance scale
Interested to know myself, I have heard good things about the BodPod and DEXA. My scale says 5% higher than visual guesstimates from multiple people.
Most methods have some error, DXA is considered the most accurate, but BodPod is typically considered 2nd or 3rd fighting for the spot with water displacement. Impedance scales are, of course, bottom of the barrel when it comes to accuracy, but as you state they are fairly consistent and can at least give you a honest trend. If I had a BodPod facility near me I’d chose that over DXA for nothing but $$$
My first N=1
I did bodpod. 3 months apart. i lost 2 lbs on scale, but gained 8.8 lbs lean and lost 10 lbs fat. So that was a huge motivator… and confirmation that scale alone is not necessarily a good indicator of progress.
My inexpensive scale did not register any change in body composition…had me at 21%… doubtful that is accurate
