Duck Eggs

(Carpe salata!) #1

I went for a drive yesterday out of town a bit and came to a roadside sign DUCK EGGS :point_right:

Never had them before so I thought I had to get some of that. I went up the drive and was met by the friendly farmer. I got a dozen. A few whoppers and mostly a bit bigger than a regular egg. They are a longer oval shape. I made an omelet today. The eggs have a more rubbery under-shell lining and the whites had a slightly more gelatinous consistency. The yolks are slightly bigger than chicken eggs. But the taste was rich and delicious.

I had asked if they were free range and he pointed to the paddock and there they were around the dam in the lush cowpasture. They had to be the freest range eggs around.

If you can stop off at Picton its on the left coming in from Sydney on the Old Hume Highway. (Go down the M5, Turn right to Narellan, past the Mt Annan Botanical Gardens then left to Picton). Its a great drive and Picton has some lovely coffee shops and wares shops to dawdle through. And there’s the historic George IV pub to visit as well.

A fine daytrip. You’re welcome.

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #2

Alas, there’s this little bit of water called the Atlantic Ocean in the way. I tried driving round it, but . . . (heavy sigh)

If you’re in old blighty, you could probably apply that to every little hamlet in the hedge-rowed country laneways.

I keep looking at them at the market stall where I buy my plebian chicken eggs (Queen Vic Markets for any Melbourne people), but haven’t actually, you know, bought any.

Go on, live dangerously!

Dude, I’m a hermit, these things are incompatible

Smuggle some back to your hilltop batcave and experiment with them one stormy evening . . .

By the way, dontcha just love those Queen Vic markets. A great Saturday morning start to the weekend!

They are awesome. I hope they survive the incompetence of recent management, and the predations of developers.

Also, less people are there early Thursday mornings
