Dry mouth etc

#1

One month into keto diet and the last week I’ve had a soar throat and had very dry mouth, eyes and been constipated. I’m trying to keep hydrated and I’m taking calcium, Potassium and magnesium supplements as well as prenatal vitamins. I’m still breastfeeding and I know it’s easy to get dehydrated but I feel like I can’t drink anymore than I already am.

I’m not sure if it’s a cold or keto flu or what. Anyone else gone through this?

Hey, I had exactly the same symptoms as you about 1 1/2 weeks back, plus I was feeling incredibly weak. They went away after 5-6 days, and I feel normal again. Also don’t know what it was… If anyone has any idea? Perhaps, Ketoflu like you said?

Yes, it might be keto flu but the weird thing is I had ketones (“high” amounts) in my urine for about a month now, aren’t the keto flu supposed to come in the beginning when the body’s switching from glucose to ketones?

From what I’ve heard (on this forum) they say the Keto Flu thing can hit at anytime. At first I read it as it was more likely in the beginning when transitioning. But have since heard others advising on a few occasions it can hit anytime. - But that those who have been doing this longer, don’t seem to be effected as much. Probably more so to do with having a better hold on making sure they supplement properly.

As for the drinking, I can understand that. I actually drink a whole lot, and maybe too much? (I’m looking into that) But if you are drinking enough water, make sure you are getting ample salt. You could also try just sucking on ice cubes from time to time. You will still get a little more water, albeit not much, but it should help with the dry mouth.

There is also a nasty flu bug going around right now, and both my sister and her husband are recovering from it. It lasts about a week. Sister was doing keto w/ me and had to modify because her throat was really sore and she lost her voice. Her doc said it wasn’t strep, so that’s a good thing. She is now transitioning back on the keto WOE.

Keto “flu” is actually a symptom of low sodium, and so is constipation. The kidneys excrete more sodium when we’re not eating a lot of carbohydrate. These days, I don’t find myself usually caught too short in salt intake, but every now and then I’ll have a symptom that reminds me to work at it. The symptoms have nothing to do with the level of ketones in the body; they are purely related to our electrolyte levels.

If eating more salt doesn’t fix the problem, search these forums for information about potassium and magnesium, which are the other two electrolytes that people often need to supplement. Also, search for the Ketoade thread for an electrolyte drink you can make at home.

I actually had a sore throat myself a few days ago. Glands, mostly the left side, were getting quite sore. But luckily it didn’t last but for a day and half, then felt fine. … I actually thought I was coming down with something myself. Usually the first indicator before getting sick. But I really don’t get sick much. Usually when the wife gets it, and I happen to get it from her, while taking care of her. She likes to share!

The winters are pretty brutal for our family with kids in daycare, about one cold per month :frowning: hoping to become overall healthier with keto diet and improving my gut health/lining and immune system!

Just in case you missed it from some of the earlier responses: it’s sodium that seems to be the most important of the electrolytes and it should help you retain more of that water you’re drinking. Also please be careful with supplementing potassium - too much is dangerous! I think that when we have enough sodium we naturally retain potassium.

Perhaps w/ keto, you aren’t getting quite as sick as you might have!
