Dr Ken on AHA statement… are the cracks starting to appear?

One thing that bums me out, however, is that you have all adopted the word “guy” and lost all the other lovely words: fellow, chap, bloke, and so forth. I always loved the irony that we used the word “guy” indiscriminately, even though Guy Fawkes Day is unknown here; whereas you used never used to use the word, despite the annual observance of the fifth of November (“The gunpowder treason and plot”).

Everything’s becoming too homogenised. :milk_glass: How can we make fun of people for using funny words, if we’re all using the same words?

The problem is still that the AHA is considered the authority. As sometimes happens I went down the rabbit hole earlier today from clicking on this article https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/top-10-evidence-based-health-benefits-of-coconut-oil?c=1239965951018#TOC_TITLE_HDR_7 while doing a search for something else. I was interested in some of the statements so clicked on the footnotes about coconut oil. I did get this nice study https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29156154/ about coconut oil reducing microvascular complications in diabetes. Most of the other studies though simply mentioned the AHA as gospel and that was the extent of the discussion https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/labs/pmc/articles/PMC7766932/ Its as though you do not have to cite anything else if you mention the AHA

With degrees in Writing and British Literature, I’m further along than most of Manchester. I don’t harbor much hope for the States, though.

I bought/shipped copies for all my loved ones and several dear friends. It’s one of the very few books for which I’ve ever felt compelled to do that.

Alas, I doubt any of them made it to the end.

I’ll see if I can get it at the library.
