Download podcasts without iTunes

(Ronald Weaver) #1

I doubt whether this is in the right category but here goes…

Does anyone know how to download podcasts onto an MP3 player without using iTunes ? I got so fed up with iTunes I ended up ditching it. But now I can’t find an easy way to get 2 keto dudes podcasts onto my mp3 player.

Can anyone help ? I’m almost completely computer illiterate by the way…

Thanks,

Ronald Weaver.

Which MP3 player do you have, or do you have an iPhone?

S’easy, man.

Just go to the 2KetoDudes podcast page and pick the show you want (like this one, for example: http://2ketodudes.com/show.aspx?episode=172)

Right-click where is says ‘Download’, and then hit ‘Save Link As’ to save the mp3 to your laptop (or whatever device you’re on). Then you can transfer the file from the laptop to your mp3 player however you would usually do it (I’m presuming your mp3 player has some kind of USB connection or similar which you can use to connect to the laptop?).

We’re talking an actual MP3 player and not your phone? If so than @buxomlass post is correct. If we’re talking your phone and assuming since you used iTunes that it’s an iPhone the only real option would be PocketCasts or Castbox as far as mainstream ones. iPhone app availability is terrible if Apple themselves make an app that they want to extort you into using. If an Android you have a very long list of good options.

Just a cheap generic player. It plays mp3 and mp4 formats and is about a tenth of what my ipod shuffle cost.

Listening to both of them and I’ve got to say the cheapo sounds better !

No iPhone either, I just can’t be doing with Apple stuff… must be me ?

Absolutely spot on !!

However, on my pc…running Windows 10…it says " Save TARGET as".

Talk about trying to confuse people ???

Thanks again.

Well, Buxomlass has got me sorted.

I’m afraid I’m not a fan of Apple products at all. Too expensive, too complicated and too unreliable… or is it just me ?

I had been using iTunes on my Windows pc’s for many years because at the time it was about the best there was. And I liked the ipod Shuffle, no complications, just played music nothing else.

But recently iTunes has been faffing about something awful. If you don’t use it for a week and go back to it you’ve got to relearn the whole bloody thing again… and you’ll find that features you liked have been hidden or just done away with.

So iTunes has been ditched as far as I’m concerned !

I do actually have a cheapo Android smart arse phone which as a phone is crap but with a bigger memory card it makes an excellent substitute for an iPod.

Thanks for the reply.

No, not just you. I’ve been a Mac user since the ’80s (and I was old, then) but I’m tired of the “far more cost than value” proposition they continue to offer. I moved to Win10 2 years ago, although I’d be on Ubuntu if I didn’t have to jockey so much MS Office content. As for Apple, at least Jobs was willing to be risky with innovation. Now it’s just an expensive mess.

Yep as a former computer geek… I have also dumped Apple products. There are so many more good options and yes less restrictive and expensive.

Yep, I’m inclined to agree…

I think this was the clincher, the ipod Shuffle copy. My wife bought it on ebay for less than €5.00 to settle an argument. Over the last few years I’d watched two of her iPhones and two of her iPads just die on her…both the iPads just months out of warranty and the phones not even three years old. I was comparing this to our Amazon Kindles, both eight years old and working perfectly. The only apple product I thought was any good was the old iPod Shuffle. No frills, just played music. Mind you, I’ve just remembered, the first one only lasted three years and then it wouldn’t connect through the docking station ! So I bought another one with a much simpler connecter. My wife was insisting that Apple was a good brand and that cheap copies just wouldn’t do the job.

Well, I can’t fault this cheapo copy. If anything the sound is better than the Apple iPod Shuffle…

I also bought a ten inch tablet thing with a detachable keyboard and loaded with Windows 10 for about €120.00 a couple of years ago, and it’s still going strong. And it doesn’t get an easy life, I stuff it in my panniers and take it with me when I’m exploring Europe on my motorcycle.

I shudder to think what I’d pay for an Apple iPad !

Ronald Weaver.

Not just you. I have been using a cheap mp3 player for years. I also cannot stand Apple. I like that I can simply clip my little player on my waistband and do what I need to do, instead of worrying about my big phone getting in the way. I have been downloading my daily podcasts and uploading them onto my mp3 player every night for years.

:musical_note: Memories :musical_note:

How many times that damn thing SUCCESSFULLY made it through the wash, (yea, I’m forgetful) I cannot say but enough for me to lose count.

I was in an Apple “Temple” once and I got the distinct impression you had to be vegan to work there …. maybe I’m wrong ?

Yeah, I love my teensy little Sony Walkman mp3 player, which has been going about a decade and survived many falls (and occasionally being left outdoors in the rain), and endless recharging. Just clips on my waistband - so much more convenient than carrying a smartphone around when going for a walk or run. I don’t think they make them anymore, so it had better not die on me!
