Hi
Had 2 G&Ts the other night and they were served with 200ml Double Dutch Skinny tonics. Couldn’t believe it when I found out (once home) it contained sugar and 4.6g of carbs. Other tonics have zero! Really blew my count and I thought I was making a good choice. So annoyed
From the UK
Double Dutch Skinny Tonic
Hi! I don’t know where you live but here in the UK we have Fevertree tonic, which is fairly new and very popular. One is called ‘naturally light’ but has about 4.7g sugar! Schweps slimline has none but its hard to get in the pubs now! Tut, 1 step forwards 2 steps back!
Have a whiskey with another whiskey as a mixer!
Hi, I’m from the UK too. They keep forcing these fancy expensive tonics on us don’t they .
Oh cool - hi!
I know! Gin has become so popular so only natural that the tonics follow!
I haven’t seen the Double Dutch, but thanks for the warning!
Time to switch to Martini’s
Tonic is very sweet and I suspect low calorie ones are loaded with zero calorie sweeteners the may/may not spike insulin.
Tonic is usually pretty high in sugar unless is specifically says it is diet tonic, and then it will have sugar alcohols (so drink or not as you choose.) although I’d be pretty annoyed that something labeled “skinny” has sugar in it. That said, 5g seems pretty low for tonic if you aren’t keto. Soda water is sugar free unless flavored.
My standard drink is a gin and soda with either lemon or raspberries.
Yeah, I just checked. Standard Tonic water has 33 g carbs.
I spent hours before Christmas reading every Tonic Water label, but my frustration wasn’t enough to push me towards making my own.
But maybe you’ve inspired me, there are lots of Tonic Water recipes online. Here’s a list of ingredients from one:
1 quart (1L) water
1 grapefruit
1 orange
1 lemon
1 lime
2 1/2 ounces (75g) chopped lemongrass (use the bottom 2/3rds of the stalks, trimming off the root end first)
3 tablespoons (33g) citric acid
1/4 cup (22g) chopped chinchona bark
10 allspice berries
5 cardamom pods, slightly crushed
2 small star anise
1 teaspoon coarse sea or kosher salt
1/4 teaspoon black peppercorns
1 1/2 cups (375ml) simple syrup
The method is simply soak the ingredients in water, strain, and add to syrup.
So a very, very, very low carb version just uses a non-sugar syrup.
We can do that!
Mmm looks a bit complex and expensive for every day consumption!
Totally fascinating though I never realised there was so much to it.
Where is the quinine? Is that in the syrup? I love tonic water and buy diet Schwepp’s. I use it to make my own Bitter Lemon. I add lemon juice (about a tablespoon for a glass). I hate the taste of gin, so I just drink the mixer.
