Dogs on MCT oil

#1

I’m reading about using MCT oil for dogs. Mine is 12 years old, in good health. I want to keep him that way. What would the dosage be for a 10 lb dog? Thanks!

What are the benefits supposed to be? My boy likes frozen treats made from coconut oil but not sure I’d want to give him MCT oil specifically. He already eats a raw meat diet.

A better way would be to switch him off dog food to a meat, fat, and organ diet.

#4

Thanks. He has been fed raw, 80.10.10 totally since he was 9 weeks old. No vaccines from birth…no stress AFAIK :o)…he goes to work with me. Regular exercise.

Ok, so he’s good then. Dogs don’t go out and climb trees so they can process coconuts into MCTs and sell them to other dogs.

I think I just peed my pants. :joy::rofl::joy::rofl:

#7

Thanks shortstuff. I haven’t been giving him coconut oil. His skin has been good so it never occurred to me to do that. I’ll have to do some reading. Do wolves eat it? That’s always been my way of thinking when considering his food.

(Allie) #8

No idea if wolves would eat it but I know saturated fats are good for dogs and my big lad was hassling me for some so I tried him and he likes it. I melt it and freeze it in ice cube trays and he eats them frozen.

#9

My cats love the stuff too. Their go-to treats are either small amounts of coconut oil or pork rinds. I use coconut oil on my skin and they hassle me for it.

(Allie) #10

Oh yes this too! One of my boys comes into the bathroom with me, I use coconut oil on my skin, and he loves nothing more than licking the oil from my fingers.

I make up a communal fat bowl for all my cats to share - equal amounts of unsalted butter, coconut oil, lard, and beef dripping all melted and mixed together and they all have such lovely coats. I got the idea from my older cats who kept licking the cooking fats from the frying pan (once cooled of course) as they’re clever animals and know what to eat to benefit them. The fatty mix makes enough to fill a big ceramic bowl and it lasts a few months.

I do gently cooked (pretty much raw diet) my dog won’t eat unless it’s slightly cooked. And I also add tumeric paste for health. Helped my dog a lot when my other had cancer so just kept doing with my healthy dog.

#12

Oh wow, that’s a great idea (combining the fats). And yeah, it really gives them beautiful shiny coats.

#13

Its been shown to have an anti epilictic effect… of course most companys just add it to a horrible crappy dog food and then tout it as a epilepsy control diet … for big £££ of course.
If your dogs on raw hes already well ahead of the game but it wont hurt tonadd some into his food, my mastiff loves it. (Found that out when I was using it to treat his stitches from nutering… putting oil on & turn around hes was sucking it out of the bowl lol)

#14

Just had a thought. Maybe start him off slowly just like a person so he doesn’t get diarrhea
We sometimes add olive oil to their food, just for enticement value if they seem uninterested. They are also fed raw (or slightly cooked- one is picky).

#15

Oh yes, I’ve learned my lesson with that for sure ;o)

I want to thank everyone for your replies and comments. I am a purist raw feeder so I’m surprised I even asked this question. Just always making sure my guy gets everything he needs so appreciate all y’all helping me sort it out. I will continue with the fish oil and keep the expensive MCT for myself!

I’d been expecting any positive/negative results to take a few weeks of use of MCT(w/CBD[real stuff from cannabis not hemp). At first I thought he was just having a good day, he turned 13 in November but gets mistaken for a puppy all the time. But, knowing & seeing my little buddy(accidental mix tween King Charles Cavalier & Cocker but looks and acts like a Cav unlike his brothers who are twice his size), I know he’s lost a step like we all do. That said, the transformation over the past week has been unreal. He shakes 80% of the time from spinal cord damage caused by one of 4 Pit bull attacks. Put them all down in my opinion. It’s the dog stupid, not the owner. Can’t get rid of hundreds of years of specific breeding with love. Anyway, I’d thought MCT was just what they used to deliver whatever is in it. Had no idea it was a stand-alone supplement. So far I’m sold. I’d tried several brands of CBD(glycerin based) from pet stores(hemp derived), and several months & couple $100 & very little difference in him. A week with cannabis derived CBD, wich was cheaper than the pet store junk & he’s doing fantastic. Can’t turn back the clock but we can do as much as possible for our furry friends. Take care all.

Diarrhea went away pretty quickly though I still think that working your way up to get them used to it is always good advice. Also, if loose stools persist, express their glands before you’ve a bigger problem. One week & he was back to solid poops. Also, some rice mixed with his meal or just rice w/boiled ground beef or chicken for a few days will help w/diarrhea. I’m not a vet so, …take with a grain of salt & do your research. Take care all

Please tell us the specific brand you are using and where you bought it.

My 12yo pup is struggling with a weakened trachea with the resulting cough. I bought JOLLYPAWS hemp oil 500mg from AMZN. It has made a significant difference. Less coughing and he’s more relaxed.

I looked for the cannabis derived CBD but cannot find it.

Thanks so much!

PS: he was always in a harness, never anything around his neck.

Unfortunately cannabis derived cbd is only available at dispensaries or in states with legal, recreational stores. Best of luck and feel free to ask any questions & I’ll do my best to answer them. Take care & best if luck with your furry friend. Heading to the vet in 5 minutes. Coincidence.

Well thank you for explaining why I can’t find it. I’m in MA so it is legal but will have to find a place that sells it.

What exactly should I ask for when I go into the store? I have no clue how it’s sold or the dosage. Will he have to learn to smoke ?

Back to watching the Pat’s parade on TV :football::tada:

Thanks!
