Does everyone gain the benefits of Fat Adaptation?

I’ve been strict Ketogenic since Feb, 2017. I started at 156 lbs and I’m down to 141 lbs. I have about 20 more to go. I’ve been in Ketosis almost since the start. I have listened to the podcast that says “You’ll just know when you are Fat Adapted”. That still hasn’t happened for me. I still get really hungry. I can fast but not much more than 18 hours. I didn’t see any bump in mental clarity or in endurance. I happy with the weight loss and the scale is still slowly inching down, but I’m getting really jealous of not getting the other benefits. Any chance I’m just not quite there yet?

Usually that is a sign of not eating enough, and particularly not eating enough fat to satiety.

Can you provide us with a typical daily meal and snacks regimen? This will help us help you with diagnosing the issue.

Did you have brain fog, poor endurance, or other negative symptoms? It might just be that you were starting off in a good place relative to others whom you’ve read about.

I definitely didn’t get there until I started eating…A LOT of fat.

Typical day is two meals. Lunch: 2 eggs scrambled with 1 Oz cheese, topped with 3 tbsp sour cream. Dinner: beef ribs with 1/2 cup of buttered Brussel sprouts. Snack: 1/4 cup of instant sf pudding made with Hwc

I’m not aware that I had brain fog, but my endurance could definitely use a boost.

I agree with @Fiorella. I don’t think you’re eating enough, especially fat. In my experience, I hardly ever feel hungry at all. Most of the time I decide to eat because it’s convenient or smells/looks good. Sometimes I feel hungry if I have a meal that doesn’t have enough fat. That only happens if I’m eating at a restaurant that doesn’t have real butter to cover everything in!

Thanks for listing your food.

Are you getting 1 gram protein per kg lean body mass? if not, I’d find ways to get more protein. It also looks like you are not eating enough fat to satiety. How do you feel after eating (full and not hungry for anything else? Or do you force yourself to stop eating at a caloric limit?)

My macros say that I should get 62 grams of protein, but I estimate that my LBM is 93, so that would make my protein 42 grams. I usually get 45 grams per day. I do get hungry between meals so I will eat a fatty snack (pudding, macadamia nuts, pecans drenched in Salt and butter, etc). When having a meal, I eat til I’m full.

Ok, Theresa. Thanks for confirming that you are eating enough protein.

So, it’s interesting that you are hungry between snacks. It is common for fat adapted people not to feel hungry at all and intermittent fast (no snacking between eating windows).

Perhaps you may want to see how your body reacts when you cut off the snacking. This will force your insulinogenic response dynamics even lower. You will likely feel more hungry at mealtime and eat more in your meals, which is ok…basically the extra amount eaten in snacks will be added to your meals. Again, if you continue eating fat to satiety in your meals, you will be eating keto. I think cutting out snacking will get you closer to the fat adapted state that you are seeking. If you reach a point where you aren’t hungry for snacks, you know that fat adaption is really kicking in.

I’ve been on the keto train since last October and still get hungry between meals. Sometimes it’s just the snacking itch that wants scratching. But I think, more often, that I haven’t had enough fat at my meals, despite using what seems to be excessive butter and oil.

This is when I drink a bullet proof beverage. I seldom have this otherwise. In the hunger situation, this drink allows me to sail through those periods easily.
