Do you have a great Dr?

(Dirty Lazy Keto'er, Sucralose freak ;)) #1

How rare is it, to have a Dr. who is all for Keto… or whatever other diet you choose, as long as your doing well with it ?
Mine is. She is probably 20 years younger than me BTW, so maybe that makes a difference, huh ? I go back to see her in 2 weeks. I’m sure she will be happy with my weight loss since the last visit… plus my little constipation thing seems to have fixed itself too  Basically, I will have nothing but good things to report.
Trying to figure out how to tell her, in a smooth way, that I’m not really concerned about my cholesterol levels (already heard back from the lab that my numbers are up) but I will totally go do another blood test (oh ! I need to do that in the next week !) so we can compare… just for fun, if nothing else  lol

Do you think more and more Dr’s will start to be more Keto friendly, as they see more positive results ???

I think so. My doctor is fairly young and is supportive of me doing Keto. He tells me that he’s learning a lot from me and what I’m doing.

I’ve talked about keto and IF with 3 doctors at Kaiser: a GP, a psychologist and a psychiatrist and all 3 were super supportive.

However, this week I got the results of my recent mammogram. To paraphrase the letter I got, “Your results are good and you do not have breast cancer. To prevent cancer, eat a diet with fruits, vegetables and whole grains.”

Oh well, at least the individuals doctors at Kaiser are on board with the keto WOE.

They should NEVER make a statement like that. Not only is this completely unsupported by scientific evidence, but the BEST they could say is “To possibly reduce your chances of cancer, …”. The studies are epi garbage, and therefore cannot be used to provide causation.

And the largest RCT ever done was the WHI dietary intervention trial, where the women under test ate less overall fat, less saturated fat, less red meat, more fruits and vegetables, and at the end of 8 years, there was no statistically significant difference in any cancer or heart disease, and the study was designed to test those.

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #5

I’d bet money that the letter Andi got was computer-generated, and the corporate office determines what goes into the boiler-plate. Because malpractice suits, you know . . .

If she knows anything at all about keto then I would be surprised if she is concerned about your cholesterol numbers. I can’t recall anyone here whose LDL’s didn’t go up on keto but many like myself saw big improvements in HDL going up, Trigs going down and the ratio between the two improving.

My doc isn’t a keto supporter AFAIK but my total cholesterol was at 259 in January and he wrote GREAT LABS!!! across my paperwork. Most docs would be pulling out their pad and writing me a script for statins.

But my HDL was crazy high (130) and triglycerides low (73) so that gave me a Trig/HDL ratio of 0.56 - well below the desirable 1.0 and my Total/HDL is less than 2 - also considered good.

Will be interesting to see your numbers and what your keto doc says!

I had been keto for 13-14 months with those labs.

Hopefully that malpractice will work against the kind of erroneous advice they hand out now in the future that contributes to diseases instead of healing them… what about being accountable for bad medical advice?

On my last appointment my doctor spoke words I never in my wildest dreams ever imagined hearing from a medical professional when she asked, “Are you familiar with Dave Feldman’s work on cholesterol?”

(Full Metal KETO AF) #10

Oh, and yes. Several doctors see me, transplant recipient and all of them love what KETO is doing for me and support other KETO people. :cowboy_hat_face:

Wow ! Sounds like a lot of good news in this thread :slightly_smiling_face:
I think it is such a blessing when your Dr. Goes along with you, trying to make yourself healthier.

I will definitely post my cholesterol numbers here, and ask for some opinions about my cholesterol ratios.

But I’m more curious than I am concerned :slightly_smiling_face:

My Dr is awesome. Not sure what his philosophy on keto is, but I suspect he will be 100% behind whatever gets results. I’ll be making an appointment for a physical in a couple months, interested in seeing how my cholesterol numbers end up. I’ve always been a vegetable lover, and my last test had overall high numbers, but the good cholesterol was high and the bad was in an acceptable range. It’ll be interesting to see if anything changes.

I switched from my long-term primary doc this year because he was reducing his practice hours and didn’t have time to take on my spousal critter as a regular client, too.

We found a younger (mid-30s?) doc taking new clients at one of the UW Seattle clinics, and so far so good. She doesn’t really say Yay or Nay to keto, AFAIK, but she is happy with the results.

My wife saw her first and got a “keep doing what you’re doing” response to her blood tests, which was about 7 or 8 months after we started low-carb. I saw her a couple of times not long after that and while she wasn’t super-thrilled with my LDL from last fall (taken before we saw her, but about 2 months into low-carb), she gave me the same response when she saw my latest lab results (attached) which showed my LDL had come back down (and Trig/HDL < 1). She also ordered me a cardiac-C-Reactive-Protein test when I asked for it (and got a score of 0.2, which she was also happy with). She put me off when I asked for a fancier LDL-P test, but I think that was because she already thinks I’m at such a low cardiac risk that it’s pointless.

Off-topic side note: we got our first DEXA scans yesterday (from a scan-in-a-van private company) and both of us had good bone densities, near the 90th percentile. I hadn’t really expected that, so there’s another bit of good news to add to our files the next time we see her.

As a male, an HDL of 72 is super high, and your trigs are very low too.

I’m one of those rare, hateful people who can eat almost anything and not gain weight. From age 32 to 52, my weight was 157 +/- about 1.5 pounds regardless of activity level (lowish to moderately high at various times) and gorging on pasta and beer (I’m 72.5" tall). I assume my nonetheless low trigs back then (except that one number where I forgot and had a big meal before my blood test) reflect naturally low insulin resistance.

Just before my 53rd birthday, my weight suddenly went up 6 or 7 pounds. The first chink in my armor? I cut back from 4 “servings” of pasta to 3 and substituted some wine for beer, and it went back to 157. Then six months later, we started low carb and I dropped to 154 then returned to 157 after a few weeks. My relationship with my bathroom scale mostly involves boredom.

Ya’ know, its funny… A lot of people who put on weight easily, will blame their metabolism (which could be true for them) But personally speaking, I think I have a fantastic metabolism. I’m just a freaking food hog ! I LOVE to eat ! And I can put down a LOT of food FAST !

I think eating the way I do, if I didn’t have a great metabolism, Id have weighed 500 lbs or more, instead of only 300 lbs (at my heaviest) Also, I have a couple of long time friends who were / are morbidly obese (350-600lbs), and they don’t eat any more, or any worse than I used to. They probably do have a worse metabolism, plus, love to eat just like I do.

I think you mean to say, “hateable” Please don’t hate me  lol

(BuckRimfire) #18

hateful adj. arousing, deserving of, or filled with hatred.

So it’s a pretty imprecise word. I’m using it in the sense of the first two terms in the definition. It’s a thing! It just looks like it should mean only the last one.
