Do I Break my 16 hour IF to Raise my Keto

(ray) #1

Woke up to low Keto. Knew it would be low from lack of fats yesterday. Intermittent Fasting 16/8. Should I break my fast just for today to jump start(raise my Keto.)?

If you mean low ketones when you woke up, that’s probably because when we sleep, we don’t need a lot of energy so our ketone levels are low. There’s also the dawn effect which naturally increases our blood glucose levels and makes the need for ketones lower.

Just because you were low on dietary fat the day before, doesn’t mean you can’t produce ketones from body fat. This process isn’t perfect until your body becomes fully fat adapted but it occurs to some degree, even in people who haven’t been LCHF for long.

What’s happening to you now sounds pretty normal. Fast if you are comfortable with it but it’s not necessary to be successful.

How can you tell when your body becomes fully fat adapted?

Fasting is the best way to increase your level of ketosis. It’s eating foods that spike your insulin that reduces the amount of ketogenesis. Carbs are the worst, protein second, but even fat causes a minimal spike. So if you are trying to jump start your level of ketosis, fasting is your friend.

Signs of fat adaptation:
~Energy levels are consistent all day.
~An absence of cravings for sugary things or the ability to easily dismiss them.
~The ability to go extended periods of time without food and your hunger not suffering because of it.

This might take a few months or even longer for some people and there are certainly some degrees of how fat adapted one is. For me, I was fat adapted enough to start extended fasting and OMAD around two months in. When I wasn’t fasting, I often ate 1100-1200 calories to reach satiety and my body was perfectly content to supplement a caloric deficit with body fat.
