Will it make the change happen faster? Best brand (not sure if that is allowed). Thank you!
Do Exogenous Ketones Help Your Body Switch Over to Fat?
Unless you want to purchase expensive pee, don’t worry about exogenous ketones. Just let your body make its own by eating Keto.
See my other post re my Parkinson’s symptoms getting way worse. Need to kick my body in to fat burning ASAP.
Not sure if you’ve seen this interview with Bill Curtis who uses keto to help with Parkinson’s but the notes include details on how to connect with him
There are plenty of articles that suggest coconut oil can help kickstart ketosis and there’s anecdotal evidence that it can improve Parkingson’s symptoms. It’s quite cheap (I pay less than $5.00 for a 14oz jar of orgainic) so it might be worth trying.
Just a word of warning… if you do try CO, try small amounts at first because some people do encounter digestive issues with CO.
You should get into ketosis as soon as your insulin drops from not eating carbohydrate. It’s fat-adaptation that takes time, and I don’t know of any way to hasten it. If ketones help with your Parkinson’s disease symptoms, then by all means take the exogenous ketones, but for most people “expensive pee” is a good phrase.
There’s a sort of joke about how to tell if you’re in ketosis or not:
- Is your carb intake under 20 g/day?
- Are you breathing?
If you can answer Yes to both questions, then you are in ketosis, lol!
Skip the exogenous ketones. Don’t focus on calories while you are getting fat adapted, just on keeping carbs low and ensuring you eat lots of good quality fats (no goal you need to hit, but just stay nourished and satiated with fats).
Eventually your body will realise its old source of energy isn’t really viable any longer and there’s this nice constant stream of energy coming in via fats. When that happens, you can begin to dial down the dietary fats (if desired) and let your body use its own reserves as an energy source.
I just looked back on my journal for the past several days and I am at or under 20 carbs except for one day where I was it 21.8. Got to watch that.
Is there at Least a range of when fat adaptation can happen, like between three and six weeks?
Thank you Gaff. Any idea what the range is on how long it takes for the fat adaptation to happen? Maybe 3 to 6 weeks? I don’t know how long I can take feeling my body getting worse. Would a fast help?
Take a look at this, it’s a really helpful guide:

Lots of useful things on dietdoctor.com as well.
From the above linked guide:
Just because your body is in ketosis doesn’t mean that it’s particularly good at using fat for fuel. It takes 3 to 8 weeks to become fully fat-adapted. Your body forgets how to deal with glucose effectively and instead gets very efficient at dealing with fat, and the ketones that come from fat burning.
Fasting will happen naturally as you progress through your journey. Children should never fast. You
should not fast until you are fat-adapted, which could take from 3 to 8 weeks.
Hope that helps!
Remember that this is someone with Parkinson’s disease. Might there not be a role for exogenous ketones in her case?
There might be, and I confess to missing that point – sorry. I do think though if someone is starting out and seeking to get fat adapted it’s better to keep things simple and easy to follow. Less variables to worry about.
Point. And in most other cases, I would trot out the line about “expensive urine.”
