Do Antibiotics affect you differently on Keto?

(Hashim) #1

Hi. I’ve been doing keto just over 2 years now. I went to the doctor and he told me I had slight strep throat. He prescribed me antibiotics. Amoxicillin to be exact. I’ve read that Amoxicillin can make you feel very fatigued. The thing is I’ve taken Amoxicillin before on 2 in 3 occasions when I wasn’t on keto and I’ve never felt fatigued. Now I’m sleeping on and off for 10 to 12 hours a day. I usually feel tired a couple hours after taking the medication. I should add that I haven’t been strictly doing keto for the past 2 months but for the past 2 and a half weeks I have and I’m just getting back in to deep ketosis. If I could describe the feeling of my fatigue it’s a very similar tiredness as if I took some benadryl. Any thoughts?

I don’t know. I have not needed any anti-biotics since I cleaned up my eating habits.

I hope you feel well again soon and don’t suffer any nasty side effects from the anti-biotic.

I had antibiotics on keto. The dr told me I needed yogurt to restart my gut biome. Never did it: had no gut issues. But, I’m a carnivore leaning omnivore so it might depend on your food.

Did you experience any fatigue? Why did the doctor feel you had to restart your gut biome?

He said the antibiotic I was taking would affect the bacteria that are supposed to aid in digestion. Don’t quote me on this, but I think I read somewhere that we can digest meat without bacteria, so I just went full carnivore until I finished the prescription. I don’t remember if I had fatigue as well.

I think many things can affect us differently when we are keto. You used to have so much “junk” in your system that a little pill was hardly worth notice. But as we get cleaner in our eating , we notice side effects much more easily.
Just my theory.

This is what’s commonly said, but it could be wrong. I saw one study where that actually made things worse. Can’t find it right now, though.

And if there’s one area that’s a morass of conflicting information, it’s the “biome”.

My Biome is a very good communicator these days. As I’ve listened, I have eliminated veggies (diverticulitis), regular cheese (lethargic and achy joints), and last: yogurt. Full fat Greek yogurt was my go-to treat. But I went a while without it for no particular reason. Next 2 times I tried it, my gut let me know in no uncertain terms that yogurt is no longer welcome here.
My doc told me to consider pro-biopics to help with my Biome. Pshaw!
I just eat what it likes. I would assume there is a wide variety in what works for individuals. My cure could be your poison. You do you. But trust your gut before your doc.

@robintemplin I tested resistant starch and other pre-biotics (anyone remember tiger nuts?) and pro-biotics. It doesn’t take much research to realize no one knows much about the biome.

Say you want to test what bacteria you have. Take two samples from different parts of the same poop, send to the same lab, get two different results. Take two samples from the same location, send to 2 different labs, get 2 different results. Saw a study where they gave people pro and pre biotics, and tested their poop. BUT they also had them swallow a pill, which recorded the bacteria actually in the digestive tract. Different results between the pill and the tests of poop.

I could go on.

And then you realize the biome MUST be remarkably dynamic. Why? Well, I fasted 4.5-5.5 days on 10+ (15+?) occasions. What happens to the biome there? Zero prebiotics for days. Yet the biome adjusts. (Though possibly gets slightly perturbed once you eat. Or at least mine appears to.)

I fairly recently read somewhere that, although the appendix is considered a vestigial organ with no purpose, its actual job may be to store intestinal bacteria for re-populating the intestines as necessary.

being zc going into year 5 now when I do take antibiotics, which is super rare for me…they work fast and better.

they don’t have to wander around a sicker body. To me personally I feel great on just a fast start to antibiotic and personally never finish them as ‘I should’-----JSUT ME ALL cause last time was an abscessed tooth.

Gave me Amoxicillin and in like 2 pills all fine and good, stopped them, went to dentist like 7 days later and he fixed the tooth and I was like…cool

thing is what medical you are facing is an issue as to stop them or not on personal choice. I knew me on what I did but in the end, your issue might be take every darn pill for what is required but also…I know I am effected fast with meds now then I was before.

healthy body on some meds react fast and great, well, in me anyway

personal chat on me with any meds, but I am also one who runs from pills point blank. Takes an act of creation to get me to take so… :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye::100:

very personal experiences for each of us.
