Dizziness in the mornings

(Scott Morgan) #1

Hey all,

I have been on a strict Keto diet now for just under a month. I started on the 27th Dec and so far have lost a stone in weight.

I am full of cold at the moment, but had a pretty scary experience on Monday, where I got up in the morning for work, went to the loo and while sat down blew my nose which triggered my balance to go and my eyes started to jiggle uncontrollably. I managed to get myself back to the bedroom and laid on the bed while the room spun. Similar feeling to being very drunk.

This morning I got similar feelings but refrained from nose blowing. Looked up on line about the dizziness and it suggests it could be down to very low blood sugar levels. I ate a small bit of chocolate this morning to see if it helped and it initially did.

Although I do love my chocolate I don’t want this to affect me being kicked out of Ketosis. Anyone had a similar experience or thoughts on what do to about the low blood sugar.

I am going to buy one of them diabetic blood testing machines as I am now a little paranoid about this situation.

Regards

Scott

Hello and welcome Scott.

Dizziness can be a sign of electrolyte imbalance but it and the cold could also be a sign that you are not eating enough. The former can be addressed by making sure you get enough water and sodium in your diet. 2 liters or so of water and 8-10 grams of salt (minimum) can likely get the imbalace corrected.

If it’s because you are not eating enough, remember that keto is not calorie restriction, it’s the restriction of carbs and eating fat and protein to satiety. There are people who literally eat more food on keto than when they were carb-based and they lose weight. It’s not how much you eat that’s most important; it’s what you eat.

Hi Carl,

I have been restricting myself to 1800 calories a day to help shift some weight. My understanding was that as well as keeping my Macros on point 5% carbs, 20% protein and 75% fat.

My feet and hands have been very cold lately. Perhaps I should up my calorie intake to about 2000 a day…

Scott

That’s a good starting point but what works for one person may not quite do it for another. It’s rather important to keep your hunger in check but not overfeeed it either. If you can do that consistently while eating eat low carb, it will change the behavior of your hormones and that’s when the real weight loss and health benefits start happening.

Thank you Carl :+1::+1::+1:

Carl gave good advice and I’ll also just add that many people don’t do breakfast and prefer to start eating later in the day. Before keto I was waking up in a bed of sweat and having terrible morning headaches due to low pre dawn low blood sugar. When starting I was checking am sugars and they continued to be high well into my keto journey. These days I eat breakfast every single day. I am not someone who can skip my first meal and would rather skimp on lunch if skimping is going to happen.

I still wake up with a tinge of headache and hunger and even though I’m 4 months in, I think my body wants to break my sleep fast. I will add that my last meal is 5-6 pm so it’s only a 12 hour fast but apparently this gal needs to eat.

Hi Peta.

Breakfast for me is Keto Coffee. Ground with two cubes of grass fed butter, 3 table spoons of MCT oil.

Mid morning some Macadamia nuts or pecans.

Evening meal is either fish, chicken, steak or burgers with something on the side. I quite like salad usually lettuce, cucumber and tomatoes with mayonnaise.

Regards

Scott

Here’s my goto chocolate:
1/3 cup coconut oil
2 TB cacao powder
2 TB crushed nuts (ie. macadamia, pecan)
stevia to taste

Step 1- mix ingredients in bowl
Step 2- pour into container or unto wax/parchment paper
Step 3- place in freezer or fridge until hard (~30 min)

Warning: the recipe has almost no carbs but it does have calories so consume in moderation
