I was just diagnosed with Diverticulosis. Finally an answer to all of my stomach issues. But I’ve been on Keto for 2 weeks and love it. Does anyone have ideas to stay on Keto and watch for what irritates Dv?
Diverticulosis and Keto
I have diverticulosis, too, and I’ve actually been doing much better since I started eating Keto. Small seeds, etc, I try and avoid in general, but I do eat them sometimes and haven’t had any problems. I think it might be the eating less, smaller stools thing that’s is doing the most good. Haven’t thought about it in a while, honestly, until you posted this.
I also have diverticulosis and on keto I haven’t had one flare up. I am even able to eat foods that have a small amount of nuts in them without a problem. I also haven’t thought about it until I ran across your post. I think this is the longest I have gone without a flare up.
You can eat nuts… there was a study in 2008 that tells all…

For many years, doctors recommended that patients with diverticulosis and diverticular disease avoid eating nuts, popcorn, and seeds. Eating these foods was thought to cause symptoms and lead to diverticulitis. A study published in the August 27, 2008, issue of JAMA , however, showed that this is not the case. The study found that eating nuts, corn, and popcorn does not increase the risk of diverticulitis or diverticular bleeding.
I am on Keto and just had a flare up… I have no idea how to eat so if anyone can help that would be great. I have just been fasting kinda doing clear liquids.
Hi! I have diverticulosis too. I started to suspect that grains cause it because whenever I had a ‘flare’ it was always meat with a grain. So now since doing keto, I’m listening to my body, and I haven’t had one flare so far but I’m new so I need a year to see. Its only been a couple of months. I make sure to avoid ALL grains. I avoid keto products that contain ‘corn fiber’ and ‘wheat fiber’, or “oat fiber” . I’m also worried about psyllium husk powder but so far it hasn’t bothered me.
I, too, have just had a really bad bout of dv. I looked for solutions which all seem to say eat more fibre and I have been eating less and less so if this is the answer I will be very disappointed. I was veg and vegan for 30 years with no problems except for IBS (but no severe pain like dv) and changed to Paleo 6 years ago and have been keto for nearly 18 months and now eat little to no veg. I was wondering if changing the diet so dramatically would help clear out blockages etc. and that was what caused this bout? I do hope so cos do not want to go back to eating lots of fibre.
Since I’ve been off grains… I don’t have symptoms, odd though if I have some liquor like vodka that’s made from grains, the next day I will have a slight amount of symptoms. Also one needs to be careful of ‘hidden’ grains even in low carb, eg: Atkins frozen dinners, most of their products contain wheat or grain fiber. I was going to buy Quest bars but saw oat fiber on the label and did not purchase them. The Atkins shakes have oat fiber. Even the Slim Fast Keto products have grain fiber. I was vegetarian for about 5 years and I had a lot of IBS attacks during that time… was eating a lot of grains/wheat.
