Diverticulitis Who has experienced while in ketoses

So I’m in the emergency room with what appears to be diverticulitis. You get this when you done have enough fiber in your diet. So who has delt with this before and any words of wisdom? Oh, and please don’t say “eat more fiber”. I have already figured that one out :joy:

You actually can get this under many circumstances. Have they performed a colonoscopy? Do you also have polyps? Antibiotics and Prednisone have been used as treatment before.

Thanks for the quick response. No just a cat scan and they have not told me the results of that. She talked about some mess but no treatment yet.

Medicine not mess

You might do some reading as low fiber is often not the cause of diverticulitis and some evidence suggests more fiber can increase incidence of its development and acute attacks.

(Paul) #6

Can you go into more detail and provide some resources? If not a lack of fiber then what causes it?

The Fiber Menace is a great book, not all of it seems legit but provides an alternate perspective with resources

I’m not sure the fiber is related so much as it may cause a reaction to the irritation if it’s there.

I remember of hearing that skin tags can be caused by insulin resistance. Could diverticulitis be something happening on the inside that mimics the same insulin resistance? Isn’t diverticulitis an inflammation problem?

(I don’t know, it’s just something I wondered about.)

Bellyman. I think it is. As for more fiber in the diet, it is true that the medical community does not know for sure what cases my issue but they do look to fiber as being a factor. I know my diet at times is low fiber so putting more in I don’t think can be a dad thing.

Caused by fecal matter (tiny seeds, nuts) getting caught in intestinal pockets that were already there. Then infection sets in. What caused the pockets isn’t always known, but diverticulitis can be very serious. You can lose part of your intestine to infection.

Thanks Brenda for this great reply! You beat me to the punch!. I suffered from chronic diverticulitis for years that eventually led to a perforated bowel. It is not a lack of fiber at all and many people with metabolic issues suffer from this ailment due to poor gut health. Keto should help eith any inflammation issues in my opinion. In my case, it was before I knew keto existed and I ended up with a colostomy (which was reversed a year and a half later).

Thanks for all this good information. It’s sounding like nuts is a major factor to the problem.

I’m so greatfull for this form!!!

HI Brenda. I have been on Keto for nearly 6 months and doing well. I recently got my mom onto it and she was doing pretty well too. However, she recently went for a colonoscopy and has way too many diverticuli. She told the doc that she was doing Keto and he flipped out saying that her colon could not handle the fat and that she has to increase fibre. She is now spinning as she was enjoying keto and all her recommended high fibre foods are whole grains etc which are not keto friendly. I’m not quite sure what to do as I don’t want to cause any more harm if it is the case that she “can’t handle the fat”. Would really appreciate your advice.

Why would fat be an issue? If she has many diverticuli they would recommend no seeds or nuts. Sorry but that seems like an odd statement for the doctor to make.

I to had the same issue as your mom. Since my bout with it I’ve given up on the “keto way”. I’ve went with a higher fiber diet and the carbs I do eat are potatoes, rice and gluten free bread all of which I try to limit how much I take in. I do not have the answers and in fact have more questions. I know for me, a truck driver, I need the fiber in my diet. So if anyone with quality real factual knowledge can chime in on this topic I would love to read what you have to say.

I did lose 20 ponds on The keto diet and felt great. Now I have lowered my calorie intake and trying to introduce some physical activity to my day.

Thank you so much :slightly_smiling_face:

I had a similar problem. She needs to eat more vegetables. Sometimes women have more issues in that area then men. So increase vegetables and maybe add a little magnesium to her diet but be careful that you don’t over do the magnesium. Keep track of her bowl movements. Also look up Leanne Vogel. She covers a lot of good info for women in some of her books and her podcast. Check her out and I hope this helps.
