Diverticulitis question

(Sarah) #1

Hey all,

Was just in the hospital a week ago, and diagnosed with Diverticulitis. I’ve been Keto for over a year and a half. This is disturbing… Of course a friend asked if maybe it’s Keto. I hope not. I haven’t been eating enough fiber for a few months when this happened, and consuming more protein.

Your thoughts?

And if any of you have healed from this successfully, can please let me know how you did it?

I have diverticula, but my physician feels that eating a ketogenic diet is not a problem, and in fact is helpful.

The reason for that is that the colon thrives on β-hydroxybutyrate, one of the primary ketone bodies. Since the main by-product of eating fiber is a chemical called butyrate, and β-hydroxybutyrate works just as well on the colon as butyrate does, I tend to believe that its not lack of fiber that is causing your problem.
