Discipline

Made scambled eggs for my wife and me on Sunday. 15 extra large eggs. Okay, that was a bit too much, 10 would have been about right.

I got through the first three months with several coping mechanisms. I kept plenty of Keto snacks on hand: hard boiled eggs, pepperoni, cheese snacks (string cheese, babybel, tillamoos), olives, almonds, pecans, macadamia nuts, and avocados. After the first month, I discovered MCT oil. I ate whenever I was hungry (and I was always hungry for the first week or two). I didn’t worry about counting calories or restricting my eating window. I kept my carbs < 20 grams, met my protein goal, and worked on finding ways to add fat to my food. My hunger quickly dropped off during that first month, and I soon didn’t need the snacks between meals. Then I started eating later and later in the day. Sometimes I only eat one meal a day, sometimes I eat 3, if I feel hungrier.

In the beginning, I also told myself that after a month I could have a ā€œfreeā€ day. When I was especially tempted, I would add the food to my mental list of possible foods for that free day. I did this day at about 6 weeks in. Took me almost a week to get back in ketosis. For months 2 and 3, I had a free meal for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Getting back into ketosis only took about 2 days. I haven’t needed a free day. since, and I stopped keeping a mental list of foods to ā€œtreatā€ myself with at about 5 - 6 months in. I’m not absolutely ruling out the possibility that it’ll happen again, but I genuinely don’t think about what I’m missing anymore. I now think more about all the wonderful, rich foods that I used to deny myself because they were high fat. I’d recommend looking at the thread #boringketo to get an idea of all the wonderful food your fellow ketonians are eating. It has inspired me to my explore my food options. Since I continue to love food and eating just as much as I ever did, I find this exploration and experimentation with new recipes helps keep me motivated in this WOE.

I also quickly began experiencing some positive changes that were, and continue to be, VERY motivating. I had some quick weight loss. I have chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia which also comes with mental fog, lack of motivation and a profound sense of malaise along with extreme exhaustion and chronic pain. Within the first month, I noticed a reduction in my pain (which returned with a vengeance after my first free day, subsiding again over the next weeks). Sometime after that, I was able to get off my antidepressant and soon felt better OFF my medication than I ever did on it. My mental clarity has improved. My sisters say they have the real me back. After seeing the dramatic difference it has made to my personality, they are both now eating a Keto diet too (along with a brother in law). My exhaustion and weakness are ongoing, but I believe that it took many years of dietary abuse to get me to this point, it may well take me many years to heal. But I now have hope that a ketogenic diet will help me improve my mitichondrial function over time.

Good luck!

When Grocery KETO Shopping
Make a list maybe too

Just make it a game
Or a walk ā€œ Around ā€œ the outer aisles

Generally speaking …YMMV

Stay on the outside TrackšŸ˜„ ( meats, dairy, Eggs, dairy, deli )

DO NOT go in or down the middle aisles
HAZARD AREA…lol
Those are ā€œ carby traps ā€œ for the most part!!! :joy:

A great way CUT carbs too
Now the Discipline comes when you start to eye those Middle aisles or your cart wants to in for the CARBS
Fight the urge
Keep ur cart straight
Stay focused

This WOE is awesome!!
No need to be bored
Enjoy

Tip:
Walk around the store in the opposite direction the next time. fun stuff

Good Luck

Stores in my State caught on decades ago and put the meat department in the back and you have to go through a bakery or ā€˜what candy, chips, soda is on sale section’ as you enter the door.

So much this. When I started, I was having a non-keto day every two weeks. I had one off plan day in all of March and I rarely want to go off plan anymore.

I got terribly ill during vacation recently when I went off plan. Body aches, nausea, fatigue, diarrhea were the way of life for about 4 days after having pizza and donuts. Needless to say I learned my lesson.

Taking it one day at a time, here. Today’s my co-worker’s birthday, and here I am in my hotel room drinking a bottle of water. Never would have done that in the past.

Walked into the hotel and there’s a big container of free cookies - chocolate chip and something else. Walked past it and got on the elevator.

I loved your story. Thank you for the inspiration.

In the beginning I kept keto snacks much like the others have mentioned. Some video I once watched said when hungry eat fat even when you want a donut. So I did. Then the cravings decreased. It he!ps me to enjoy similar snacks that I used to. Like guac and pork skins. So good. I still tend to eat too many nuts on occasion. I have now discovered cheeses. Grocery Outlet has different cheeses at low prices. I mean like 2.00 for 4 oz. And like @dimorril I love to experiment with new recipes. My husband asked me who are you and what have you done with my wife? I like cooking now. Now that I don’t have to do it 3x a day. Or even everyday. I love keto. It’s awesome.

Same, I started keto six weeks ago and thought I’d have a ā€œcheatā€ day on my birthday but I didn’t even want it. I made some keto cookies instead and my mom made a keto meal. It really proved to me that this…lifestyle? Is possible for the long term.
