Different Results 15 years apart?

When I was 20-21 years old I used the Atkins Diet (phase 1 only) to lose a ton of weight, going from 300 to about 225-230 in five or six months. The weight fell off. Of course, I put it back on, and now at 35 years old I want to use Keto to take it off again.

My question is, could I have damaged my metabolism or is there some other reason that the process may be different for me this time around? I mean, I realize I’m 15 years older, and that may have an effect, but I haven’t lost a pound in several weeks after dropping 8 pounds of water weight in the first 5 days.

I’m gonna hang in and keep going, and all the macro and calorie stuff is okay. I just don’t remember this stall after the first drop when I did this last time.

I’m 309, down from 317, and hoping to get to 240-250. I’m 6’2” for reference. I’ve been in Ketosis since about day 3 and vary from light-moderate on the test strips everyday.

Thanks for your help.

Hello, Steve.

Are you eating 3 meals a day, or doing any IF or EF?

If you could post what your normal eating habits are like, that might help the smarter ones around here figure it out.

I’m eating 2-3 meals a day. But I’m not eating any differently than I was 15 years ago. Fasting is something I’ll probably do at some point but it’s something I definitely didn’t do 15 years ago.

Sorry, Steve, but this still doesn’t tell me anything. You need to forget about what happened 15 years ago and focus on the here and now.

Some people can only eat 20g of carbs a day to be in ketosis, others may have to fast for 5 days before they can enter ketosis, while some may be able to eat up to 50g of carbs a day and be fine, and continue to maintain ketosis the whole time.

I have no idea what’s stalling your weight loss, if I have no idea what you’re eating or what your eating habits are. Pretty much all I can say right now is keep your carbs at 20g or less a day.

I DO know this, if your eating habits aren’t any different from what you did 15 years ago, and you’re not losing weight, then what you did 15 years ago is not helping you now.

As someone who lost on Atkins, similar to your lose-and-gain-it-all-back fashion, though not as dramatically as yourself, and, a decade later, in desperation, and now aided with Dr. Westman’s direct consultation, I’m delighted with LCHF eating. One key difference between us is I was 35 years old on Aktins, and 55 now, on LCHF.

I’m nearly certain I’ve created a severe insulin resistance for myself. We don’t know if that’s the case with you, but there’s one way to find out. I cannot get those damn pee strips to ever, ever turn color. You know what? It doesn’t matter. I’ve lost the weight and I’ve been maintaining now for 9 months.

Thanks to Dr. Westman’s approach, I didn’t enter this way of eating to “get in ketosis” I did it for weight, and now fat, management. Ketosis is a process, not the goal. BTW, there’s a ton of other reasons to do LCHF, namely, it’s far healthier for you.
