Thanks for that–you’re right. You’ve given me a whole new rabbit hole of inquiry to dive down! Don’t think I won’t!
Dietitian's sick son maybe getting better?
Diane,
So generous of you to share so much of your story. I’m glad you’ve found some improvement! It has been less than a year for you? I can imagine that more healing can still happen from the dietary change. Some comes quick (fortunately), but some improvements surely come over the long haul? I actually have a history of chronic fatigue syndrome myself. On disability in 2003-04. I’m much improved, but will be grateful to feel even more energetic. It was a confounding factor in figuring out what was going on with my son since we had such similar symptoms, but different causes.
Please, do stay in touch. I hope Dr. Myhill can offer you some good ideas. We reach for any little thing, don’t we?
Warmly,
Laurie
I prepare my gym drink by pouring probably at least a quarter tsp of salt and adding apple cider vinegar and that effervescent Nuun electrolyte tablet to mask the taste of salt. I can’t stand the taste of salty water but I’m ok with vinegar. The drink is about 32oz and I can easily go through it over 1 hour workout. It’s not the best tasting alternative but as usual, you can experiment with ratios.
I’ve been on a Hot Sauce tour. I try to pick up a couple of different bottles whenever I shop. My go to has been Louisiana Hot sauce. It’s the same hot sauce use by Popeyes’s fried chicken. It’s also one of the cheapest, and comes in larger bottles that most of the others.
Lately I have made a return to Tobasco brand. They have three flavors I know of. Regular, jalapeño and chipotle. All three are very very good, and usually best under specific uses for each. I don’t remember how much sodium they have, but I often add salt to most anything I eat anyway. The chipotle makes a great ketchup replacement. Doesn’t taste anything like it, it’s more like a Smokey BBQ than ketchup. But it is wonderful. All zero carb as well.
I had debilitating fibromyalgia for 18 years. When I first got it I had to quit work. Over the years I went on different kinds of medication that provided some relief. Not quite three years ago, I upped my healthy fats (although I wasn’t doing keto) and noticed my annual spring time relapse didn’t occur. Decided to taper off of meds. Have been off them completely for over a year and as long as I stay on my ‘diet’ which consists of no sugar, no grain, no seed oils and higher healthy fat consumption I have no symptoms. Where as going on brisk walks too many days in a row would lead to a relapse, I have now been jogging daily for almost three years. While I am not technically on a keto diet, because I don’t count macros and sometimes I go over the recommended 20gs of carbohydrates a day, I am pretty close to one (which is why am lurking on these forums) Also, I bought Keto strips and am always showing moderate amounts of ketones except right after exercising when it shows trace. I have been stunned at how ignoring the currently prevailing dietary dogma has changed my life. I cut grain about 8 years ago because I’d gotten so heavy and after reading “The Glycemic Load Diet” - since then I’m down 93 pounds. However 53 of that was since upping the healthier fats.
That’s awesome!!
You’re keto. Your ketones prove that. It would probably be considered “lazy keto” if we had to give it a classification, but hey, it’s working for you!! And that’s awesome!!
20g a day for carbs is just a point at which most anyone can get into ketosis. Some need it to be way under 20g. Some can go up into the 50g or more territory and remain in ketosis. I’m guessing I’m somewhere in the 30g to 35g area many days and I’ve been doing just fine there. Some days lower, a few days here and there a little higher. I don’t even bother to check anymore except when I’m just a little curious and want to see.
You are proof that a person doesn’t necessarily have to micromanage their macros to the point of the ridiculous and exercise like a fool to lose weight or get healthy. Thank you for sharing!! (And don’t be shy about posting. You’re just as in tune with this group as anyone here.)
I wish we’d known a little sooner about keto and put my FIL on it. I wish you luck!!
I love the chipotle tobasco sauce (among the many hot sauces I love). I’ve used it in my eggs (scrambled and in egg salad) for a change. I’ve also used it along with low carb ketchup and mayo to make a dipping sauce for “French fry” alternatives.
Thanks for mentioning the Louisiana Hot Sauce. I’ll look for it!
@Rinda, pay special attention to this (if you didn’t already). If you can get grain & seed oils out of your son’s diet, I’m guessing/hoping it will make a big difference in his joint pain. I am walking around on two knees that will eventually need to be replaced, but my inflammation has been drastically reduced with keto and this change. I get around a LOT better.
So happy to read about your experience. Thanks for unlurking and sharing with us.
Congrats on weight loss and being meds free.
My go to hot sauce is
Use it on my eggs all the time. I use others for sometimes, but I buy this in a small TSA approved size whenever I travel.
Some of the hot sauces mentioned above I find too vinegary in flavor, I love vinegar, but I like my hot sauce to be peppery, not vinegary.
I can eat habaneros straight up and drink ACV straight up as well, two very different things and oddly I don’t like them together.
Whoa… I can get the normal-strength ACV (5% acidity) down, though there is some degree of body rebellion that has to be dealt with. But habañeros, now - far too hot for me to be outright munching on them. Kudos, Collaroygal.
Cholula - indeed it’s good stuff. I’ve never noticed much a difference on vinegary taste, and would group it in with Louisiana, Frank’s RedHot, Crystal, Texas Pete, etc. - you can drink glassfuls of them.
Thanks, just had a DXA scan yesterday and have just 17 pounds of body fat to go before I am no longer ‘over fat’ – If I can keep my lean body mass in tact, then that’s 17 pounds and at at the RECENT rate I have been going that could be by this spring. How glorious that would be! My mantra, “slow and steady takes you to the finish line”
I’ve started a new thread about my CFS journey in the health category. I’ll include my new “experiments” and results there.
I can’t thank you enough for posting the information regarding Dr. Myhill’s work. It has given me new hope and new avenues to explore in my self prescribed treatment regimen!
Welcome to the forum!
Here is link to Dr. Axe on the subject if your interested:
I used to love hot sauce, until I did a month of Whole 30 where I did not have any hot or spicy food including hot sauce. After that, I realized when eating hot sauce again how badly it affected me. It causes me an immediate allergic reaction. I had interpreted this as just the effects of hot sauce, but now I realize how bad of a reaction I got. So, I keep my hot sauce and pepper eating to an infrequent treat.
Yeah Bob, lately I find myself using more hot sauce. Roasted chicken was getting boring as were omelettes, but now I look forward to them when armed with some hot sauce. And it looks like Louisiana is the winner of saltiest hot sauces @ 200mg of sodium per tsp.
I also salt nearly everything I eat but that doesn’t get me close to the 2 tsp per day I am trying to get. I’m tired of drinking salted water and salted coffee so other sources that don’t make me say “bleh” are most welcome. Thanks for reminding me about Lousiana.
I love that line!! People get very impatient and want to hurry things along. It’s kinda like that in today’s world, with just about everything. Patience is a virtue. But I’m not gonna pray for it. LOL!!
