Hey idk what it is but I can’t stop drinking sodas so I switched to diet… has anyone had any bad or good effects when on the keto diet?
Diet soda
Diet Coke, diet mug root beer and diet dr. Pepper have 0 effect on me (they use aspartame as a sweetener), I have done n=1 on myself to confirm. This is me, I have read others that say they do effect them. The only way to know for sure whether they will effect you is to either abstain or do some n=1 testing of your own.
Dr. Jason Fung has a great chapter about this in his book “The Obesity Code”. According to the book, while artificial sweeteners do not raise blood sugar levels, the do raise insulin levels. Aspartame and Stevia have been shown to raise insulin levels higher than table sugar.
Whole point of keto is to keep the insulin down, so diet sodas “might” interfere with your results. I have heard of people drinking La Croix to help them kick the soda habit
Fung may be wrong… I am saying MAY, at least least when it comes to aspartame. Sucralose and some others though, that is another story.
What i have observed is different strokes for different folks. I cannot have any artificial sweeteners. Not aspartame…nothing. Others get away with aspartame, as well as some other sweeteners. Best thing to do is test and find out what works, n=1.
Not sure if you guys have seen this article breaking down the sweeteners.
The Ace-K (acesulfame potassium) thing is a big deal, and a blood glucose test won’t catch it because it spikes insulin without raising blood sugar. It’s amazing how many diet drinks use it now - to the point that there are only about 5 diet sodas left that don’t use it (Diet Coke, Diet A&W Cream Soda, Diet Mug Root Beer, Diet Dr. Pepper (regular and cherry), and Diet Sun Drop). Almost every non-soda diet drink uses it as well - ie, Powerade Zero, Vitamin Water, etc.
I used to be a huge Diet Mt. Dew drinker, heard Dr. Nally cover this on the Keto Talk podcast, cut it out entirely in favor of Diet Dr. Pepper, and noticed I didn’t have nearly the same response - felt much better right away.
Anyway, that’s my 2 cents. These articles cover that info in detail.
Some companies own artificial sweetener manufacturers. For example, Coca Cola’s mothership company owns Truvia. So, I’m not surprised that there would be preference of one sweetener over another.
I’ve experienced a major reduction in appetite and overall intake when drinking diet sodas. Mostly because they make me want to vomit. I can’t stand the stuff.
It’s not any particular company in this case, it’s literally all of them. The 3 major soda manufacturers in the US are Coca Cola, Pepsi, and Dr. Pepper / 7-up and all but a small handful from each of them uses Ace-K, except Pepsi, which uses it in every diet drink they make. I suspect it’s purely economic - it’s either a taste thing or it’s cheaper, or it helps deflect attention from Aspartame, which has all the bad press without as much proof that it’s actually bad.
Diet Dr Pepper, Diet Coke, and Zevia (various flavors) are my go-to choice.
Ingredients label from zevia can right next to me:
carbonated water, citric acid, stevia leaf extract, natural flavors
I think some also have a stevia/erythritol blend. No ace-k luckily and they have plenty of different flavors like black cherry, root beer, grape, etc.
Hi, how are you? I wanted to share my experience…I was a diet coke addict for the past 15 years or more…now Im 28 years old. But this year I quit this horrible addiction to diet coke. How? Drinking lots of water, it really gives me the energy that i needed when I was drinking diet coke. It helped me with my DEPRESSION, my LACK of ENERGY, MOOD SWINGS. If you want I can talk to you more, but please if you are a diet coke or regular coke addict I can help you! It CHANGED my life!!
