Diet drinks

(Carl Keller) #21

I did find a study, using mice, that said:

the artificial sweetener saccharin could alter gut microbiota and induce glucose intolerance, raising questions about the contribution of artificial sweeteners to the global epidemic of obesity and diabetes.

It also gave reference to another study:

A previous study found that consumption of Splenda, a nonnutritive sweetener containing 1% sucralose, impaired the growth of gut bacteria in rats [18].

Aspartame and sucralose are sold under the brand name Splenda.

But I will also re-emphasize that they are comparing rodents to humans, for what it’s worth.

Thanks for looking that up!

You’re welcome. I opened up so many related cans of (ugly) worms trying to find that! I could easily go back and spend the rest of the day examining them. :stuck_out_tongue:

#24

This is my problem too

#25

Another problem with these studies is they pump the equivalent of about 100+ cans of Diet Coke’s worth of sweeteners into these mice, and a human would drown before they ever reach those amounts. And after learning about how often the Sugar Association is usually the one to let it float about how ā€œdangerousā€ artificial sweeteners are, I just prefer to take my chances.

I drink an average of 1 diet soda per week and have not seen any BG spikes. Haven’t really tested specifically for them either. Maybe I should.

However, I do have noticeable fluid retention after drinking diet sodas.

I have also noticed a mild BG spike after adding HWC and even a small amount of Splenda to my morning coffee. Now going black during my fasts.

Artificial sweeteners can affect insulin without affecting BG.

Good points

From what I’ve been reading, diet soda is just as bad if not worse than regular soda. The replacements that they use can still have an insulin response. If you are looking for a replacement, get yourself a soda stream and carbonate your own water and add lemon juice or lime juice as flavouring. If you are still missing the sweetness add some liquid stevia.

I find it difficult to believe anything could be worse than regular soda, or juice for that matter.

Welcome and well done on 9lbs. Yep the scales go up and down and round and round - it’s a jiggly curve never a straight line.

Your body regulates water levels but only to a + or - 2lb range. So only consider weight at exactly the same time, like after first trip to bathroom and average over a week or three …

As for Mountain Dew (Diet or not) - yep - that goes straight around the belly.

My thoughts are stay in keto, make very sure you’re in ketosis for a couple of weeks. Really nail that 20g carbs that is not negotiable. Meantime your taste and appetite will change. It just does.

I have an ā€œemergencyā€ block of 90% dark chocolate. I thought I’d need it from time to time - turns out this change in taste and appetite is very real. No great surprise I suppose we eat until satiety - eat until full. So after all that steak and veggies or bacon and eggs, who needs junk?

Look forward, things will change. (Stay under 20g carbs)

Cheers.

When I suggested lemon or lime juice, I mean to say, cut a lemon open and squeeze it into the water… not ā€œjuiceā€ sold in stores. And also, you can choose to believe what you want, but in my mind, the chemicals or processed sugars and sugar alcohols that companies use as sugar replacements are definitely worse than the sugar found in regular cola and definitely worse than the small amount of natural sugar found in a lemon.

#33

I won’t argue with you about the lemon, but they haven’t used ā€œnaturalā€ sugar in sodas for a long time here in the states, and they only ever bring it back as gimmicks or if you’re fortunate enough to be in a place to get ā€œMexican Cokeā€. If I pump myself full of a straight shot of 39g of HFCS from a can of Coke, multiple times a day, I can verifiably confirm that it will be worse for me than the aspartame in a can of Coke Zero; same if it was ā€œpure cane sugar.ā€

Just because something is ā€œnaturalā€ doesn’t mean it’s ā€œbetter.ā€

From what ive read myself, at max what most diet cola sweetners might do is give a small spike on insulin levels due the sweetness, but its brought down by body in about 30mins back to normal levels. Dont have anything to confirm that but it does sound logical to me, knowing how our bodies work and how corporate food industry works and how they engineer products to make a buck.

Ive always been a big fan of zero cokes myself, when i started keto i bumped up my zero cola usage to compensate for carb cravings. For about 2 years i have used 2-3 liters of zero cola daily on average whenever im on keto. Obviously cant say if it has effect on me as i use it everyday and ive lost weight regardless whenever i am on keto and pretty rapid speed. Perhaps without it i would lose little bit more if those possible insulin spikes from sweetners are true. Caffeine also gives a nice boost to workouts so it could also be balancing the scale with insulin spikes, but who knows.

Either way zero cola really makes keto work for me and i wouldnt ditch it even for miniscule boost to fat burning.

How’s about Zevia 0 calorie soda- sweetened by stevia

I have started to drink 1 can a day. Originally I wanted to ā€œtreatā€ myself to one on Wednesdays, one on Saturdays, and one on Sundays- Cravings for a Zevia has increased- After I finish the rest of the cans I got at home, I will not buy anymore- and stick to good 'ol H2O-

Aloha!

Coincidence?

I think not.

Amen to H2O

As I also do 20:4 intermittent fasting and the mechanics of that are to keep your insulin as low as possible (giving you longer periods of access to your fat stores for fuel) drinking diet drinks or using artificial sweeteners can negate that as many don’t create a glucose response but they can cause an insulin response, even if not swallowed.

For me, if I drink them it is only during my eating window when I am already creating an insulin response. Outside of that, it is water or black coffee or plain tea.

My wife does these because she has stomach issues with artificial sweeteners, I have tried them… they are NOT for me. Then again, lots of people here LOVE avocado but I can only deal with it in guacamole.

Great suggestion! I got one of those carbonation machines (soda stream brand) and I use it all the time now. You can get the carb free Mio flavors products or just use some lime or lemon spritz or zest to flavor.

Invest in a meter, it is well worth the money. I recently bought a Keto-Mojo from their website. It uses 2 different strips to measure glucose and ketones in the blood. The urine sticks will become useless once you become fat adapted for the most part as they show excess ketones. When your body gets better at using ketones you have less excess regardless of how many you are making.

I bought one of the larger kits and a couple extra packs of glucose and ketone strips. Ketone strips are locked at $1 per strip for life if you buy one of the Founder’s Club kits.

I barely register anything on the pee strips except first thing in the morning when my blood ketones will register 1.7-2.3. When I get home from work 8-10 hours later and having been fasting for 20+ hours at that point, the pee strips barely register… while my blood ketones are still in the 1.7-2.3 range.

It is money well spent. You can’t quantify what you don’t measure.
