Did keto put me in the hospital?

I was diagnosed type 2 diabetic on november 3rd of this year my dr has warned me for years I was insulin resistant and headed towards diabetes I’d listen for a few weeks and go back on heavy carb eating I’ve been eating strict keto every since I walked out of his office at his suggestion on December 23rd at midnight I started having severe stomach pains suffered through the night then my wife took me to Er after some test they decided it was either my appendix or a small intestine bowel obstruction I had a colonoscopy last year so that rules out a tumor and since I’m not having pain where my appendix is that rules out that so now I’m wondering is it this way of eating?

I would think no, but without knowing what you’re eating, it’s hard to say. If you’re eating a lot of processed food, even though it’s keto, it could cause stomach upset.

Eating keto will NOT cause appendicitis or a bowel obstruction though because keto is primarily about keeping carbs low.

  1. Sorry to read your difficulties
  2. A low-carb diet does not ordinarily lead to what you’ve described. However, as @cw2001 says, we have no idea if your interpretation of low-carb is accurate. For a T2D, you’re on the right path.
  3. I’m glad you went to the ER. Great people here, but it doesn’t replace a medical doctor, practice or guidance.

If you have any gallbladder problems, or if you have no gallbladder, suddenly eating large amounts of fat can cause severe pain. Not that losing your gallbladder precludes you from keto WOE; it’s just another thing that will have to adapt. I had similar issues the first few weeks of keto and I lost my gallbladder last year.

If you want to share what you ate, it would help us help you better.

If you eat a LOT of new things that your gut isn’t used to processing (ie raw kale, spinach, or other veggies), it can be hard at first. It could have something to do with not having the right gut flora for whatever you ate. Not sure. Just restating what I’ve read elsewhere.

Also if you took a lot of electrolytes at one time, it might cause discomfort, leading to the runs.

Otherwise, it probably doesn’t have anything to do with keto. Keto is just food. Sometimes it takes a bit of time for the body to transition, but it doesn’t cause severe pain. Not based on my experience or what I’ve read.

Keto is THE BEST diet for type 2!

My doc who is keto friendly told me in rare individuals missing a specific chromosome they can develop pancreatitis. I’d have that checked with stomach pain,
