DEXA scans UK

#1

Anyone had one done in the UK? France to actually but that is more unlikely to get a hit! I have seen a few that offer scans in London around the £150 mark. I am tempted to get one done when I am over briefly in July. Just wondering if anyone has a recommendation and ideally a cheaper option.

The place I went to for my CAC scan does them but you need a doctors referral, no idea why…
Will have a hunt around if you like. London only or south UK?

no idea what the are like though

Thank you, that sounds way better! Somewhere easy to get to basically. I will be in Worthing, London and Leighton Buzzard. I figured London was going to be the easiest and most likely to have choice.

There is an outfit called “Bodyscan”. I don’t think it’s particularly cheap, although it seemed to be well reviewed and I found the website to be very clear, although not looked recently, and I haven’t had one yet.

You’re gonna be in Worthing? When… lets have a coffee…

Ooooh great idea. Not for a while. Fleeting visit in July. I am there I think Friday and Saturday 8th? around there. My mum and step dad are having a joint 70th party on the Sunday.

I’ll look at that. DXA seems to work though. I keep meaning to just phone the nearest radiologue and explain it to them so they can point me to the nearest or at least how to find.

Also I noticed with that cheaper UK place there are different levels. What do we need? The cheapest one was classified as osteoporosis check and I forget the other one - vertebral something? Neither stipulated LBM but it is only something that is used to get these measurements but actually for checking bone structure etc. no?

I am living in south Wales and have looked online and I found a place in Bristol called “Body Composition UK” that does DXA scanning for a reasonable price of £99 and additional scans for £75 or a 3 scan pkg for £199. After Brenda shared her experience of having a DEXA scan I researched a place to provide this service here without having to deal with my GP’s office. Their website states “Under current regulations we will only carry out a DEXA scan where it is addressing a health related problem”. I will call them tomorrow and inquire if I need an RX or can go on my own health journey. I hope this info will be helpful and I will update you once I have gone.
UpdateI spoke with them today and you do not need a RX from your GP. They have a doc on the premises and they emailed me stating "to qualify for a scan you need to have a specific health/medical issue, recovering from a sports injury or on a sports fitness/diet programme. www.body-compostion.co.uk

Good luck…and please let us know… I self referred for a CAC scan but the place that did that said I needed a Doctors referral for a DEXA… go figure…

I’ve used Bodyscan and was happy, bit expensive but can save a bit on multi deals.
They are one of the few (only?) who specialize in dexa for body comp in the Uk, most clinics with dexa primarily use it for bone density scanning which uses same scanners but running in different mode I believe.

full disclosure: I have done some work for them in a technical capacity in the past but have no financial link or incentive to promote them (I was paying customer when I used them)
