Developed a gluten intolerance from keto?

Hello all,

I have been doing keto for 8 weeks. It’s gone pretty good. I recently this last week went on vacation and decided to splurge and had 2 donuts. The following day, I felt HORRIBLE!!! I had severe body aches, headache, diarrhea, fatigue, and nausea. I was in bed all day during my vacation. I had to drive back the next day feeling still pretty bad. That happened on Tuesday. It is now Friday and I’m still not feeling that hot. Just tired with a little headache and GI upset. I’m easing back into eating with bone broth and light foods. I’ve have several people tell me that is how they feel when they eat gluten. Could keto make me gluten intolerant??? I never had this problem before keto.

I’m guessing here that you may have had a gluten intolerance that you never noticed because when we’re eating the usual western diet we don’t notice how ill we are feeling. You stopped eating that stuff but have then re-introduced it after feeling so much better on keto. It now becomes obvious that that shit makes you ill and now you notice it.
I was having a similar conversation today with a guy working on our house. He was saying how his friend did keto and then started to re-introduce gluten and felt like crap. I’m guessing it was the same as you …

I agree with the above answer that you prabably already had a gluten intolerance. Once you get it out of your system and the body starts to heal, the healthy cells are hyper-sensitive.

I kind of thought that too, but keto hasn’t really made me feel great like everyone else seems to. I still feel pretty tired all the time.

Sure it wasn’t flu?

Sounds like it could have been an illness rather than gluten. I have cheated 3 times in 11 months. The first time was deliberate and I was so sick by the next day but I felt fine by Day 4 (cheated for 2 days) and was ok by Day 3 when I started a fast.

The second time was 4 months later and I had no problems at all.

The third time was last week and I felt a little worse than usual but nothing major.

My daughter has Celiac (I did not when tested 10 years ago but I carry the gene). She accident ate gluten a month ago (made two batches of food and she ate the wrong one). She felt fine. Not everyone with gluten intolerance reacts

If you do have Celiac then it was probably there all along as others have

That’s not right. What’s a days food look like for you? Are you watching your salts and electrolytes?

there are gluten free donuts, if you really want to get all science-y about it. do another test. or just dont eat donuts, and accept that youll never know exactly why they make you feel like @$$, just that they do. this is not the worst food aversion you could have,

if you want to know more about gluten, try eating some pasta. its much higher in gluten than donuts. or any of the fake meat products that are made primarily of seitan (pure gluten)\

My typical day is usually BPC for breakfast with butter and MCT oil. Lunch is usually leftovers from dinner like keto chili, Alfredo noodles and dinner is usually something like lunch. I drink pickle juice on occasion. I also take ACV. I tried to take Magnesium but actually felt worse

Today’s dwarf wheat is pretty awful for you. Would be best to drop from your diet anyway.

Real Alfredo noodles or a Keto version?

(Brandy Fischbach) #12

Keto version

Are you getting enough salt? I have to constantly be on top of my salt intake or I feel like shit. 4-5 grams minimum. REALLY.

Shortly after my Dr told me I was no longer diabetic, I happened to go to an Indian restaurant. They made the most amazing naan I’ve ever seen. I ate a bit, about 1/4 of a piece. Boy, did I pay! Headache, diarrhea, etc for a couple days. I’m pretty sure I have no gluten issues. I just attributed it to the carbs.
Funny thing is that the smell of the naan was much better than the actual taste. And I’m sure it truly was amazing naan, according to my companions. I’ve just lost the appreciation for it, along with my ability to digest it.
