Deserve impulse

(Vladaar Malane) #1

Aside from indulging in sugar occasionally in dark chocolate, or stevia in fat bombs, I find that every now and then the old I deserve impulse hits me.

It’s not often, but I think it’s something I want to work on in addition to trying to go completely sugar/stevia free for awhile to see how it impacts me.

The I deserve thing seems to hit me most, when I’ve worked hard, am stressed out, or special occasion

Anyway, didn’t see any other post on the deserve thing so thought I would see how others deal with this. Deserve isn’t hunger craving, it’s just mentality.

Oh yeah, I am well-versed in the “I deserve” logic!

The thing that works like a charm for me is that I’ve trained myself to replace whatever food I’m craving or deserving to “a spike of insulin”. Then I try saying to myself, “Boy, that spike of insulin sure looks tasty” or “I deserve this well-earned spike of insulin.” and it doesn’t sound so appealing anymore.

Nice one. Yes, it’s a peeve of mine. Thanks to IF, I’ve been able to shove this genie back into it’s crusty bottle but it wasn’t easy. And for all that hard work and discipline? I deserve… a fast.

I actually completely forgot about Mars bars until you posted that. You just don’t see them around much anymore. Yeah, I do IF too but I deserve thing seems to hit me on holidays or rare occasion we go out to dinner for a birthday. In my mind, it’s the holiday or the fact that I’m 46 that the deserve thing comes into play. Like 4th of July, I indulged in a a small amount of fudge and cheese cake. Even though I didn’t eat much for dinner, it’s kinda the holiday thing. Not a craving just a feel good emotion with the holiday or like tradition as we always get fudge on the 4th.

<said in stentorian fashion> to the gallows with you!

Perhaps because I’m 55, and because my large metabolizing body was able to eat huge amount of carbage in my past, I’m resolved to never “indulge” in this fashion again. I would have had problems with that stance a decade ago. Your body may handle sugar better than mine. My body balks at any sugar, probably due to my wearing my body down eating all that crap.

I handle this in a couple of ways. The first one I got from someone on these forums, actually, and that is to look at something tempting and think “death-food” or “poison.” Very helpful. The other is a 12-Step technique, and that is to acknowledge the craving while postponing the satisfying of it. For example, “I really deserve those three dozen glazed doughnuts, and I will definitely eat them tomorrow; just not right now.” They work for me, and might for you, too.

Yes, Paul! The 12 step totally applies to food addition as well. There are few things I like better than food, and I comfort with food. I treat with food. When I think treat, I’m not thinking a piece of bacon.l @Vladaar_Malane See if you can find anything you like better than food. For me it is a visit with a friend.

So true! And yet . . . I think I may be coming round to that. What was it the ancient Romans said? Omnia vincit amor baconi, wasn’t it?

Agree with yourself that you DO deserve it, but that, at least for the moment, you are “choosing” not to indulge in it. For me that removes that “forbidden fruit” appeal and empowers me - it’s my CHOICE not to have it - it’s not because any one or any thing is telling me I can’t have it. If you feel it’s in your power, you won’t feel deprived.

This is what I feel like in every fast I do. I know that every minute I can end the fast, and sometimes I do. But the feeling of doing it just because I choose to do it means I feel powerful over food, rather than the other way round (which is how I have felt for most of my life).
