Describe the first time you felt your new keto-fueled energy level

First, to give me something to aim for, and second to focus my fuzzy electrolyte-deprived brain. Thank you!

So, for me at least, it was less of a ā€˜feeling’ and more of a ā€˜state of being’. That probably doesn’t make any sense, so I’ll try and explain.

If you’re slowly hiking up a very large mountain and you’re focused on how far you have to go, and how hard it is, and how many more nights of camping you have before you get to the top, and then thinking about the hike back down, and how sore you are… etc you’re going to be miserable.

You may even spend half your time purposely slowing yourself down, looking back at the base where you left thinking 'Well if I turn around now, I’m gonna save myself all those troubles I’ve been mulling over. I won’t have to be miserable anymore, and I should just do it because every step I take makes turning around more difficult.

Well, even if you start off a hike this way, if you keep it up long enough eventually something strange starts to happen.

With each passing night, you wake up the next day still sore, but a little less than the last as your body slowly adapts to the hike. Before you know it, the pain and suffering has dulled to a low background noise. You’re actually seeing all kinds of beautiful things around you in nature. Streams, animals, flowers, the views, etc.

And one day, you wake up, and step outside your tent, and you look back down that mountain. And this strange thing happens. The same path you just walked, that in the beginning had you tempted to turn back around before you were even a few miles from your car… you’re actually looking forward to it. And you look up to the summit, and you think ā€˜Eh, it’s not that bad, I’ve got this. Hell this actually feels easy, and I’m enjoying it.’

That. That’s what being in ketosis felt like for me.

It’s not a feeling so much as a retrospective awareness. Looking back to a week or two prior and thinking ā€˜Holy crap, why did I ever think this hike would be hard. I’m having a blast!’ Or, just as enlightening but a slightly different feeling ā€˜Holy crap, how did I not realize I was miserable, and how could I possibly have thought that this hike was WHY I was feeling miserable.’

Last Wednesday, the third day of a fast. I had never used any salt, other than on foods, but that day got some of the Himalayan pink stuff, some sea salt, and the ingredients for Brenda Zorn’s Ketoade. Really like the pink salt, did a couple hits of it during the afternoon, and mixed up two big cups of Ketoade. Don’t think I had any big deficiencies, and have felt fine during past fasts and keto eating - I’m 4 months into it. Far from perfect, i.e. I’ve had some carbohydrates along the way, sometimes way too many in a day, but I’ve averaged about 6 out of 7 days really staying with the program.

Wednesday evening, it had been 72 hours without food, and after the salt and Ketoade, I felt slightly warmer, and just really good physically, even ā€œpowerfulā€ like long ago when, as a runner, you knew it was going to be a good day. Wondered if I was going to be able to sleep that night… No problem there; it was just a really good evening.

I can’t say I feel amazingly energized overall, but i did notice a couple weeks in that I was no longer napping. I would normally nap at least 5x a week, at some point throughout the day, and as much as I felt like I needed to (which I didn’t … I was just used to it), I just couldn’t sleep again after initially waking up in the AM. It’s been 100+ days, and I haven’t had a mid day nap since starting!

I started keto four years ago and I don’t recall the exact moment, but within a couple weeks I was feeling amazingly good and energetic. I had just turned 51.

One night I was sitting in bed text messaging with a buddy at work. He asked me how the new diet was going. I told him, ā€œDavid, it’s 11:00 at night and I feel like I could go outside right now and paint my entire house, I have so much energy.ā€

Yes, energy. I’ve always loved moving around and doing things productive, but these days I continuously marvel how good I feel, and how much energy I have after hours and hours of yard work in the hot sun. I’m 60. My grand children have less energy than I do. When did I notice this amazing energy? I wasn’t paying attention, but I do know it wasn’t right away. It might have been so gradual that I didn’t notice till recently, but after 8 months of eating this way I feel fantastic.

I love all your stories. I’ve been excitedly awaiting the morning I jump out of bed feeling like the Hulk (sans anger) to begin my shiny new keto-fueled life. Thank you for the reminder that it’ll happen, but it may be gradual. Tim your parable is fantastic. I get it now. Enjoy the journey, even if it’s tough. One day you’ll realize the prize has been yours for a while.

Keto in Katy and Arlene, I love it. I’m almost 48 and have felt more like 98 in recent months / years. I’ve never had a weight problem but I’ve been a slave to sugar my whole life, and packed on 20 lbs over the last year, my first year ever working from home. I was probably eating close to 1000g of carbs a day – the main reason I found Keto. The thought of your level of energy is mind-blowing.

Keep the stories coming. They’re completely fantastic.

I’ve been lo-carb for over 6yrs but started Keto about 4mos ago. I had hit a plateau on my weight loss and decided to go back to Adkins Induction and that’s when I found Keto, so I’m no stranger. I had done Adkins back in the 90’s, twice with success until I moved into management and the weight came with the carbs, of course. I don’t think I had much trouble with getting into Ketosis like most people, thank God! I felt better within the first week and only had some slight headaches and not much flu symptoms, but it wasn’t until about 3 weeks in that it hit me. I got up, went into the garage to the utility room and viewed everything with different eyes. I saw all the cleaning, clearing out stuff etc. that needed to be done and I was actually able to visualize myself doing all these things! Before I would have been so tired just thinking (visualizing) about it. That was the day I knew for sure that I was fat adapted! A day or two after that my pee sticks arrived and I did test positive for ketones. Now I have a blood meter and I have stayed in Ketosis and I certainly feel better, I sleep better, I don’t need to nap so frequently and I am getting much more done. Did I clean the garage out? Not yet, LOL but it’s on the list.

Probably about 2 months after starting to eat keto. I had a huge pile of tree trunks that needed cutting down and logging up, I started in the morning and about 4pm realised I hadn’t stopped, hadn’t eaten and wasn’t tired at all. Carried on like that for the rest of the week until it was all done. I’ve never had the crazy amount of energy I have eating this way.

I hear that—I get so tired just visualizing a big job around the house. Ketosis, you can’t come fast enough (but I’ll be patient)…

@Duncan_K Love it. Sometimes keto seems too good to be true. But I guess not, since we pay our dues by saying farewell to hot fudge sundaes, lasagna and chocolate cake–a small price to pay for optimal health and boundless energy.

For me it just kinda came one day. I noticed that I was able to go long periods of time with sustained energy. It probably happened a week or so after I got over the ā€œketo fluā€. I noticed I was able to focus better at work and my mind wouldn’t wander all over the place. I know I have a bunch of energy when I’ve worked at my second job being on my feet all day for 8 hours at 11pm when everyone else is tired and ready to go home and I could keep working for another couple hours.

Love love love the energy that comes with Keto!

(Art) #13

I’d done a few 1 day fasts, then bumped it up to 3 days at a time. Three of those longer ones, and I was feeling it - much less ā€œemptyā€ and out of sorts.

It was a gradual transition for me, before I was eating a mostly plant based diet for a year. I had issues with falling asleep and getting out of bed. Not being fully awake in the morning while driving to work, and zoning out at the end of the work day and getting sleepy while driving home. My neurons were not firing correctly. On a carb diet, when you just wake up there is that short amount of time where my brain is in a jumbo before it can think clearly, that’s no longer a thing now. All of this is fixed with a high fat diet.

Love it!

I’ve done Keto in the past and not had quite this experience so maybe I just finally got it dialed in or something but…

I started Keto (again) December 1st
I haven’t been hyper vigilant about tracking macros but I haven’t been full on lazy keto either. I have been watching my electrolytes a lot more closely this time around and making sure I get more sleep.
So today is Day 15, and holy smokes, I feel like I’m on speed or something. I am vibrating with energy, can’t sit still, feel AMPED!
Today is the first day I have felt this way.
I was feeling suuuuper lethargic all the time pre-keto, just dragging my ass around day in and day out.
Weighed in for the first time today since I started since I was feeling so uber fantastic and…
SW: 166.4 lbs
CW: 155.8 lbs
-10.6 lbs in 15 days
Holy Moly
Guess I’m doing something right!

It feels like being Thor.

(Karl Bork) #18

I had a hard time napping, then I stopped trying.
