Depression on keto

(Barbara Lehr) #1

My husband and I have been doing Keto for about six weeks, and he has plummeted into what seems like a fairly serious depression. He has always tended towards being depressed, but his affect seems to have drastically deteriorated. Is this a thing? Maybe his brain is starved of glucose but his body is not making key tones yet?

From what I understand, the switch to a ketogenic way of eating does affect various hormones, not just insulin.

Wish I had some suggestions. Is he taking any supplements?

Ask him if he wants to quit. If he feels it contributed to his low mood, then change the plan.

Or change the plan by adding 30min daily walking exercise.

Exercise and electrolytes are the first things I’d try. I was in a funk when I first started and a lot of it was because I felt so crappy because of low electrolytes. Some men are too macho to take baths also, I used to be. But a bath with lots of Epsom salts is a huge mood booster for me.

He exercises regularly and take all sorts of supplements. I will try the 5htp. He has used that in the past and t might help him again. Thank you everyone.

Electrolytes are fine too.

Magnesium can drop in a ketogenic diet.
and there does seem to be some mood boosting with magnesium supplements.

As discussed, walking is a great mood booster.

It might be the magnesium you like.

Added extra magnesium yesterday.

I went through something similar early on. For me I increased seafood & started supplementing with iodine both of which are good for thyroid. Three days later I felt like a new man. Not sure if it’s the same for your hubby but I hope it helps.

Low D3 can also contribute to depression, has he had a full blood count recently that you can check?

How is his sleep?
