Depression is a bitch!

I’ve suffered from depression for pretty much all my life, it comes & it goes, but because I’m a stubborn stupid cunt I always try to ignore the fact I’m going back down the rabbit hole as long as I can. I’ve been getting worse recently and although it’s not really changed how I’ve been eating (although I did have a bread bun with my beef stew last week) as usual I have started drinking more (thanks Dad for that wonderful coping strategy), and as always when down it’s lager, so I’m no longer in ketosis. Finally gone back to my therapist and realised that it’s just a less obvious way of self harming. So, I’ll be booking a weeks holiday from work, doing my best to cut back on the booze again and getting back to keto proper. Even though I’ve not been in ketosis it’s not seemed to affect my hunger, still been IF’ing etc so hoping it won’t be too bad.
KC fucking KO.

Yes. Depression is a bitch. I know that platitudes don’t work. Bravely sharing as you have done, does. KCKO

I am a fan of cognitive behavioral therapy (cbt). It can be done with a therapist or as self help. It is very effective for mild depression, anxiety, and addiction (including alcohol). I have also found that keto is a mood enhancement, or conversely, eating a bunch of carbs brings on a chronic fatigue and a mild depression.

Ugh, Ellen, I’m sorry.

Rhonda Patrick has compiled a lot of studies on cold therapy and how it significantly boosts norepinephrine by incredible amounts and can be effectively used for depression. Here’s her crazy in-depth report if you’re curious, and there are also several podcasts in which she’s talking about the research.
Wim Hof has an online course but also plenty of free instructional stuff on his website.
I would think that it would go well with CBT or other therapies.

Have you considered an antidepressant? I had to wean myself off mine after changing states (need to find a new GP and get health insurance in my new state), and so far so good, but eventually I know I’ll have to go back on it. Genetic counseling can be helpful in finding an effective antidepressant for your body.

I am always amused by how we depressives seem to pick a central nervous system depressant as our drug of choice. You hear it a lot in A.A. meetings.

I suffered from chronic clinical depression from the time I was a teenager. I tried cognitive therapy many times and eventually went on drug therapy which helped some. Many times my depression would begin in the fall when the sunlight hours got short.

I started keto in mid October in 2009 and realized about a month in, I had not started my drug and was feeling fine. I have not had a serious bout of depression since. I believe there is some good research into the role diet plays in depression and it might be worth looking into. Dr. Emily Deans is a good place to start.

Wishing you success in your recovery. Living with depression is very, very hard.

I’m hoping that this will help alleviate some of the worst of it, fingers crossed, at least I’ve not gone back to my old triple/quadruple carb meals as I’m sure would feel much worse if I had.

Thanks Madeline,

I’ll check out both of those.

HI Paul,

Yep, been on current anti-D for about 4 years, combined with 3 years of therapy, it works most of the time, but every so often I still get a bad spell. Yeah, I know what will cheer me up, a 12 pack of depressants! Just got to keep plodding along and surviving one day at time.

HI Cathy,

That’s great, fingers crossed it stays that way for you  I’ll have a read of that once I get home, I’ve seen several posts by people saying keto has helped.

I will survive, been here many times before.

Sorry you are going through a rough patch. I’ve been there so many times. I have weeks where things are OK and weeks where I hate myself and think I am damaged and broken. I wonder, ‘why me?’ Other people seem so happy and carefree.
Please practice some self care. Taking some time off and relaxing may be just what you need. Therapy is great. Have you tried CBT? Just know you are not alone. Keep fighting! Depression is a bitch and a liar!!

Make 'em tall boys! Yeah!

Here, maybe these will cheer you up a bit; they always work for me: :bacon::bacon:

Bacon ALWAYS cheers me up!

Hiya.
I am sorry you are feeling so low. I have found keto helps enormously with my depression. There was a big difference between more moderate LCHF and keto - the former not helping much. I have had times where I have gone off keto and my mood plummets. I have also found it a good indicator of carb creep for that reason! Drilling down on keto has become the easiest way to break the downward spiral. I would never have imagined I would be saying that after decades of feeling out of control where food was concerned but it is true.
I have also done a long block of therapy and found it very effective. I hope you find your own way to break the cycle soon. x

Thanks Daisy, am hoping that keto will help as so many say it has.

I genuinely think it will. It won’t necessarily get you all the way (although it might - does for some) but I pretty well guarantee that it will help. Sometimes that is all you need to get the ball rolling. Good luck. x
