[Day 3] of Keto

#1

This is my first night at work, I don’t really feel very different yet. I was wondering if I’d get the ‘keto flu’ but so far so good.

I spent an absurd amount of money in the last couple of days on keto centric food and ingredients, got some Mrs buttersworth maple syrup, almond butter, swerve and some other various baking supplies. I’m someone who usually eats a lot of sweet and sugary stuff, I’ve had to give up starbucks frappuchinos and icecaps, so going cold turkey would be nigh impossible for me, so I rushed to see what level of keto safe sweet stuff I could manage.

That swerve sugar replacement? Tastes almost exactly like sugar and not like stevia. Made these chocolate reeses looking cups with that, mint, cocoa, cream cheese and almond butter as the active ingrediants (since none of the grocery stores seem to have cocoa butter here) tastes sweet and delicious, so im hoping I can keep up with sugar free treats to get me through 3 months or so.

I’ve started at 221 lbs or so, and my goal is maybe 170 or lower. I’ll see where I end up in 3 months assuming my willpower is strong enough. I don’t plan to make a lifestyle out of it, I know full well youll just gain all the weight back if you dont. But im planning maybe a 3 months on, 3 months off, assuming im not eating pure garbage in those 3 months off keto I probably wont gain much weight before I lose again. But we’ll see how it goes.

I’m sorry, doesn’t Mrs Buttersworth contain corn syrup? Even the sugar free stuff?

Welcome! I’m pretty new here myself, it has been an excellent resource for me, I hope you find it helpful. You’ll have to see how the 3 months on, 3 months off works for you, but in my experience I put the weight back on much faster than I took it off. I was keto for 3 months last year, couldn’t quite stick with it (complicated reasons which I believe are worked out now), but I didn’t eat a lot of crap after stopping it either. Just added back in some of the stuff I had craved a lot of while I was keto, but didn’t become a sugar/starch monster or anything. But the weight came back in about a month, then kept climbing slowly upward. Your experience may be different and unless you’re in dire health (doesn’t sound like it) it’s probably fine to experiment.

there’s a sugar free one but it won’t show the ingredients…

edited to add…

chemical shit storm :unamused:

IMHO…Normally when first starting it is best to stay simple. If you start out using all the “sugar free” products you are not giving your body a chance to kick the sugar addiction. You will still be having a insulin response to these products and usually hinders weight loss too. Then again you can experiment with it and see what happens. If you do stall it will more than likely be these replacements that causes it.

Yup, that’s what I thought.

It’s made with sorbitol which can be made from corn syrup, but sorbitol itself is fine from what I’ve researched, its an alcohol sugar.

It took quite awhile to build up the weight I have now, probably two years or more? I was sitting comfortably around 170 before that point. My problem is I spent years drinking sugar pop every day or every other day, daily chocolate bars etc. I would get icecaps every morning just out of habit because I wanted to wake up, even so with that lifestyle, i’ve stuck around 220 pounds without going beyond that, so I’m confident ill lose quite a bit as I add in some intermittent fasting.

Well in my case, I know I can’t do cold turkey, I’ve tried several times beforehand. So having some replacements will help out in the meantime. Even when I was on sugar I do get tired of it and crave savoury foods more often, its just about having those options on hand so that when the dessert craving hits, I can do something about it.

I’m certainly not trying to discourage you from trying this out, but yes, my weight regain post-keto (about 20 lbs) came back within a month, despite having taken a few years to accumulate in the first place prior to doing keto. But if you’re also fasting, you may have better results with resetting your weight “set point” so that it stays low. Let us know how it goes.

Corn syrup and molasses are both listed as ingredients, not just sorbitol.

(Jennifer) #12

Yes it does. My understanding is real maple syrup.

#13

Here’s exactly what’s on the label. I bought some under recommendations from this forum and cross checked information on a few different sites. Perhaps all versions aren’t made equal?

(Allie) #14

You need to check the ingredients not just the nutritional info.

Are they not legally required to list the amount of sugars in a product lest they get sued by diabetics dying because of it?

Edit: I’ve been skimming through the legal rules for sugar and nutrition labels here in canada. Here’s what I’ve found.

"Ingredients that Functionally Substitute for Added Sugars

Ingredients, such as sweetening agents, molasses, fruit juice, honey and maple syrup, give a sweet taste to foods. These foods do not meet the prescribed requirements for the “no sugar added” claim. See item d) in Summary Table for Carbohydrate and Sugars Claims below.

The information letter Criteria for the Nutrient Content Claim No Added Sugars provides further information."

" To make it easier for consumers to identify all the sources of sugars added to a food or beverage, the new labelling regulations require that all added sugars ingredients be grouped together in brackets following the term “Sugars”.

"Sugars – Related Claims
“no added sugar”, “no sugar added”,
“without added sugar”

Regulations
Contains no added sugars, no ingredients containing added sugars or ingredients that contain sugars that substitute for added sugars. The similar reference food contains added sugars. "

It seems there are different labeling requirements in other countries, thankfully I live in Canada.

I don’t believe corn syrup has to be listed as a sugar. Nor other sugar substitutes.
