I’m on day 3 of my fast now and was going to do a fat fast but had no interest in eating so I turned it into a water fast. Last night I felt terrible even after taking in some salt. I ended up vomiting bile and severe diarrhea. I feel better today and having some tea with salt added. I’m thinking I need some potassium too but I always think the sodium potassium pump should take care if itself. Has anyone else experienced this?
I’m going to start introducing fat and protein as soon as I get my appetite back!

”…This week I decided to do a video post instead of a regular written one. Why? No reason. Just to change things up. After about five years of writing a weekly blog, I thought it would be a nice change of pace. …” - Dr. Jason Fung M.D.
Here it is:
what breaks a fast?
Salt can make you want to throw up if you take enough - a couple of tablespoons in a glass of water can be hard to keep down - straight salt on a spoon even harder. To keep it down it is good to follow with rinsing your mouth and then some sparkling water.
Salt is used in a “salt flush” to clear your colon. Everything in your lower intestines is turned to mush and wants to come out about 1 to 2 hours later - for about 2 or 3 hours.
These are both natural.
I can relate. Personal experience. I woke up one night with severe foot cramps. Realized I hadn’t supplemented any salt all day, nor had i eaten, which I usually use a lot of salt. So I did a very bad thing. I poured a palm full of salt and tossed it under my tongue. I was figuring osmosis would get it through the mucus membrane, like nitroglycerin for a heart patient.
After about a minute, it was apparent I needed to swallow it. I grabbed a bottle of water and flushed it down. By the way, was about 2 to 3 tsp of salt. Yes, felt like a mouthfull. The cramp went away within 30 seconds. A new feeling arose. I felt as if I was going to vomit. It was a very strong urge. I knew it wasnt food related, so must have been the amount of salt having a reaction on my stomach.
I drank the rest of the water, refilled it, and drank it down, and went for another. I figured diluting it should help out. It did. I felt perfectly fine about a minute later. Entire episode maybe 5 minutes.
Things I’ve learned… keep salt intake HIGH. I now salt my food almost to the point where it no longer edible, but still tastes ok. And since thats only one meal a day, I supplement salt by drinking about another quart of water over the next coupke of hours with two tsp of salt in it and a 1/8 tsp of potassium, a tblsp of ACV, and a few squirts of Stevia. I’ll sometime live on the wild side and add about one ounce of fruit juice of the day, just because I can. I know this recipe isnt knocking me out of ketosis (at least not very long if it does) because I’ve been losing a steady one pound a day for about a week now. I just hit my lowest weight in about 15 years this morning at 188 pounds. I dare not jinx it by changing what I’m currently doing.
This might just be my own ignorance showing, but I gotta know, what does that mean?
If you are wearing some device that takes care of this for? Or are you assuming your body will self regulate it all?
The potassium side of things, from what I understand, it doesnt get used up as often. And supplements of potassium really need to be watched close, as high levels can build up quickly, and be deadly. I figured watching the normal daily allowance of that, and never supplementing more than one third of that, should keep potassium levels OK.
Salt on the other hand, you need to be proactive about. Your kidneys are flusing salt out almost as fast as you take it in (ok, a little exaggerated there). I’m taking in 3x the daily suggested allowance of salt. I’m think close to 9 tsp a day, just to keep electrolyte cramps away. Being very careful not to ingest too much at one time. Can have horrible results.
Definitely not getting too much salt. I put a couple of pinches under my tongue…maybe not enough.
Sodium potassium pump is Na and K staying in equilibrium regardless of how much K or Na you take in. I was wondering if I needed to supplement with K…just not sure. I still havent eat yet and coming up to 72 hours. Starting to feel hungry. Had herbal tea with a pinch of salt in today.
