Damn u Costco

(Bob M) #21

I don’t mind what Costco has, but it’s far from the best. I find most of their products are lower quality. Their Kalamata olives in the jar for instance are good for adding to things, but not for eating by themselves. Their 80/20 ground beef is way, way fattier than the 80/20 beef I buy at the local market. Their steaks are hit and miss. Most are bland. Their oils are OK, but nowhere near the best oils.

They are much cheaper, though.

They have good cheeses, although the sizes are too much for us to buy usually.

You also have to watch for Omega 6 oils in a lot their stuff, such as anything prepared. A lot of their olives and other similar products have canola or other higher Omega 6 or GMO oils.

Wait fat is not good in beef? :0

I use bison, so I am not familiar with their ground beef. But the steaks, I’d have to go to a specialty butcher about 20 miles away to find better steaks. The stores near me have terrible beef. And robber prices on avocado oil, plus they don’t even state they have organic avocado oil. I do travel 30 miles to get the extra virgin olive oil from France I like, the Reims champagne vinegar no one else carries, and olives that I use in salads. I don’t use the Costco olives because I like others besides kalamatas. Basically I save so much on my Costco products I can splurge on those few items I travel to buy.

I do like their cheeses and since going keto the large sizes are not a problem for us.

@Anniegirl9, you should give us the address so we can properly educate them on their new “healthier” options!

? Who’s going vegan ? I was responding to a poster who doesn’t like the nasty chicken in the caesar salad, and costco is replacing the polish dog with a burger.

(karen) #26

I’ve been extremely impressed with the price of organic items, as well as the wide variety. My local food stores have good sales but never ever on organics, which are either crazy expensive or practically non-existent. Ok, Costco’s quality might not rival my boutique market, but it’s also not going to bankrupt me, like another poster said, I can treat myself to something special on occasion with all the money I save there.

#27

My experience is just the opposite, ctviggen Everything we buy seems to be very high quality…perhaps meat most notably. I don’t buy their FrankenFoods.

We love it there. Even the parking lot is striped well. Door dings are EXTREMELY unlikely.

Just my 2 cents.

Costco only sells USDA Choice and Prime cuts. Meat cuts are rated per USDA standards, not Costco, and those are the two highest ratings you can get.

(Aimee Moisa) #29

I wish they put the roasted chicken on the caesar salad you get in the food court like they put it on the chicken alfredo inside. I’d be all for that.

(LeeAnn Brooks) #30

You know we sell packages of the roasted chicken meat that’s been peeled from the bone.

Doesn’t include the skins though.:frowning:

(Aimee Moisa) #31

Yes, but… then I’d have to go inside to get the chicken when all I want is a quick salad for lunch and my hubby and daughter are ordering pizza.

(LeeAnn Brooks) #32

What’s this “inside” you keep mentioning?

Are you one of the locations that has the food court access outside?

Ours is all inside. It be nice outside in these beautiful warm days, but probably not practical in the middle of January in Michigan.

(Aimee Moisa) #33

Yup, we live in one of the most beautiful and temperate parts of the US, the Central Coast of California. Hardly ever rains, never snows, until about 5 years ago never got above 85 degrees, and all our Costcos have the food court outside. The one in Hawaii was outside too, despite the constant rain. But, when I say inside, I could also mean INSIDE from the cash registers. The Costco I used to go to in Florida the food court was outside of the cash registers. Are there any where the food court is inside relative to the warehouse cash registers?

(LeeAnn Brooks) #34

I’m confused as to what you mean. The food court has its own registers, but it’s adjacent to the regular check out lanes. You can also buy food court items from the regular check out lanes and then just show your receipt to the food court workers to get your food.

(Aimee Moisa) #35

I guess I’m just not expressing myself well.

(Jane) #36

From the article: The Polish dog is being cut to make room for healthier and vegan options, such as acai fruit bowls and organic burgers.

We’ll have to agree to disagree then. I’ve been buying from a local store and a local farm (not grass finished beef, though), and both of those are vastly superior in meat quality to Costco. For instance, the 80/20 ground beef from the local store, we don’t even drain after cooking. I did that with Costco’s 80/20 beef, and there was so much fat in it after I put it in the fridge that I threw it away. And that’s after I tried it and it really had what I thought was a bad taste. And I pretty much just eat meat, so that was supposed to be my meal.

And my wife complains about their steaks being bland almost every time. Sometimes we get a good quality steak from there, one that actually has some taste, but most don’t. Remember: I’m comparing with a higher end store and a local farm.

Now, if you’re putting the meat in a dish where it’s not by itself, they’re fine.

(Edith) #38

I will admit, that I also think the beef at Costco is bland. I do like their organic ground beef and when they have the wild caught salmon, their price can it be beat.

#39

This conversation has moved from your initial point Jason, that it is disappointing Costco is removing a popular, healthy item and replacing with vegan food, to an overall critique of Costco. Don’t understand why they can’t just add vegan items to the menu without removing the polish dog. The food court must be able to handle a limited number of items.

As a consumer, I love Costco, too.:heart::heart: I think the products are high quality and I have never been displeased. I love the EVOO and AO. Recently, I read a review of Costco by a third party saying that Costco ensures that their oils are high quality and are not tainted with vegetable oils.

I don’t buy much beef there because I can buy it on sale at other places cheaper, but I do buy a lot of sausage, pork belly, chicken and fish and have never been disappointed.

I bet it is a great place to work. You can tell a lot about how a company treats it’s employees by the the way the employees treat the customers. The customer service is top notch. I love shopping there and the employees have always been pleasant to me. I turned in my Sam’s club card about 15 years ago because I was fed up with the lousy service and have been a Costco member ever since.

The only wishes I have is that Costco have longer hours and they have squeegees at the gas service so I can clean my windshield. And they don’t get rid of the polish dog…
