Daily carb in take for explosive athletes?

I’m a professional boxer. Have done my 12 week training camp in ketosis for my next fight sticking to 20net carbs daily.

I get confused because I hear of people increasing carbs for performance etc? There’s a lot of material for endurance athletes but I’ve yet to find any for explosive athletes

Disclaimer, I’m not a fighter myself.

Joe Rogan did a recent podcast, and I forget which guy he interviewed but they specifically brought up fighters as those who could do with some carbs and easily slip back into ketosis because of just how much more active they are compared to us non-superheroes. I’m going to try to look for the episode, it was within the past 45 days or so I think.

I think it was this one:

Thanks. That is one of the references that got me a little confused because I listened to that podcast and thought maybe I could get away with more. And than other Keto athletes like Keto Savage stays 20 net carbs and lower all year round for the past 3 years. I have purchased a blood keto metre and after this fight I will start increasing my carbs on training days and see how much I can get away with.

I forget all our bodies are different and there isn’t a rule fit for everyone. I currently do 1.5 hrs of hi intensity training 5-6 times a week. My body recovers so fast tho. No inflammation and no soreness from post workouts. So I wont change anything until after this fight but If I could I would eat more carbs if I can get away with it hahaha

Dr. Phinney thinks explosive athletes will probably do better on more carbs, but whether that should be daily or just before the event isn’t clear to me. You might want to try looking for interviews with Peter Attia, a surgeon who got interested in ketosis as a means of dealing with his own metabolic disease, and who has done a lot of experimenting on himself. He is an athlete who is intensely interested in maximizing performance, and his thoughts on the subject are well worth listening to.

Wow! Thanks PaulL. I’ll def look in to it. I think I’m getting an edge over my opponents. Even if my power decreases I can get away with losing power and still knocking people out. It’s the fatigue and fitness that’s my weakness so for me Keto still a win for me even if I decrease in power. But if I can get away with eating more carbs and increasing in explosive power than why not.

Peter Attia is great. It was reading his blog that brought me to LCHF,

Phinney and Volek published a book that focus on athletes - “The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Performance” that looks to be interesting.
