Crisis: I really don't like eating this way

#102

Thanks, Janie. Thinking ahead to the cooler months when I really enjoy a nice bowl of pea soup. I usually make it vegetarian, but I think I will add some ham to it; maybe get a ham bone to up the flavor. Have it w/ some greens, like spinach (don’t like kale, although chard is fine).

For Ginger info you can search the forum here - I’ve shared links to certain research links - and if you do a web search on studies, there are lots of good ones on its bioactive compounds related to cortisol, insulin, pain relief, anti-inflammation, enzymes.

Yes, supports agni - and - is anti-inflammatory! Deranged fire is often due to inflammation, which is different than strong stomach fire. There are several kinds of agni too.

Re nuts - there are ketoey people that don’t count non-starchy veg carbs at all, and those that consider nuts a perfect food in small amounts. You can soak them and they are more filling when eaten, of course.

Thank you for this idea! I’m totally having an open faced bacon sandwich for lunch tomorrow.

And, have zucchini chips in the oven for a side of crunch factor

Where there’s a will, there’s a way.

You may have been frustrated, and for that I am grateful. There’s a wealth of great suggestions in this thread and we all have you to thank for that

KCKO!

That sounds like an amazing lunch! I made some today timed perfectly to lure someone over to the keto side. I pulled it out of the oven moments after she arrived at my house. She tried it and said it was better than regular bread :yum:

To you today haters out there, if you ever get the chance to eat freshly made tofu, do it. When tofu is first made it has the most amazing flavor, but this flavor is ethereal and will disappear in a few hours. When it does, you end up with the bland blocks most are familiar with.

I think this is meant for @AnnM as she was asking for the recipe not me. Good to know nonetheless. Thank you.

As for bread my family loves this flat bread

Just drinking warm water instead of normal temperature caused some skin rashes on my face, and other flare-ups that I now don’t remember. I concluded that all my reads weren’t obviously enough and to do ayurveda correctly I would need a good ayurvedic doctor, and for that the only way was maybe find one in Paris, because in Lyon there is nothing but fluff and masseurs. And possibly do a quite thorough panchakarma, but for that I would need to stay for several weeks in India, and I can’t do that as I have a child to take care of. If I leave him with my husband he will probably have worn the same t-shirt for the whole month I was away, and eaten twice a week.

I wish I could try that tofu, or maybe I did because in Thailand they were going to buy tofu in the market every day, maybe it was that fresh one you talk about. Even the “old brick” is rather tasty I think, slightly nutty, and anyway it takes the taste of the other things it’s cooked with. I don’t particularly like its consistency as is, and I always stir fry it apart so it gets all crunchy, done like this I love love it. I could eat it every day and never et tired of it.

I would like to propose that the forum adds a “plant-based keto” tag, or “vegetarian-vegan keto” if that’s better. Well I don’t know if anyone but a handful of people would use it but why not.
Where do I go to tell that to the admins?

#113

Oh I only have pure love for my icecream maker and for mandolines, if you want extra thin slices there’s a japanese one (cheap) and by far the best mandoline in the market, I’ve put iit on my amazon wish list but everyone ignores it sigh, it’s fantastic, I can go look for the name. I have no particular sympathy for spiralizers because I don’t think the blades can be honed. Now zucchine aren’t difficult to cut but it’s still annoying.

#114

looks amazing

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #115

There is a “Vegetables” section in the Food forum, designed for exactly what you are talking about.

#116

Yeah I feel that vegetables are not a problem because I can use for keto the recipes or methods of cooking I already know, or most of them, although of course one can still learn new recipes. It is more about plant-based proteins and keto meals ideas. Anyway, maybe there are too few people interested in something like that. It was just a thought.

@margot17 I’m sorry I don’t have any suggestions for you. I love the ketogenic diet, and have missed very little of what I used to eat. Sorry, none of that’s helpful, I know.

But I’m glad you brought this topic up, because it’s easy for us who don’t have a problem eating this way to not think about any alternatives.

More than anything, I want to commend you for being concerned enough to try keto, even when you don’t like it. To be so convicted by the science behind the diet, that you’re willing to give it a try, though you know you won’t like it, it very admirable.

Even though I don’t have any advice for alternatives, I hope I can offer some encouragement. I’m sure if you tackle this problem with the same conviction that lead you to the ketogenic diet in the first place, you will find a solution. Then I hope you’ll share it with the rest of us, so we can try it too!

I hope you can work this out. Good luck.

Thanks guys.
Dead-fred, love your handle and avatar, very funny!

It is great that this works for your brother. I was eating this way for years and it caused me to put on 40 lbs that I had lost eating this way! The problem for me is keto seems to be a natural break. I eat, then I am not hungry and I have no desire to cheat, even on my birthday. With the hybrid (I called it moderate carb moderate fat, Mediterranean style) I always cheated. I would find any excuse from a family birthday (my immediate family is 19 people including in laws!) to a wedding or other occassion (there were some months that I went to 4!) I gave up eating wheat a long time ago except when cheating because it really does not agree with me, especially in large quantities.

I resisted going keto even after I enjoyed fasting. The items I missed were not the bread and pizza (which I only ate on cheats for years anyway) but the fruit, especially bananas and anything ripe in season including oranges, nectarines and especially figs (still miss those!) and sushi.

I have a bad family history when it comes to T2 so I am motivated even though I do not have it. Friends who have known me for years claim I am just more motivated now because I watched my father recover from a heart attack (he is doing well, not keto but LC and higher fat, not really high fat but he is a TOFI anyway, off all T2 medication). However, I found keto because of my father (was searching for a solution for him and his T2) but it was months after his heart attack and in the interim I was on my “hybrid diet” stalled and cheating still! It is simply that with keto I do not cheat and I am not even tempted to. On my birthday H ordered a small scoop of ice cream so that they could have something to put as candle in. I literally took one bite and was done and was simply not interested (I am more of a doughnut and cake person to be honest but would have eaten it 2 years ago). I do not believe cheating is about willpower, yes there is a tiny element of willpower but I have none, never have. Rather, there is a hormonal physical addiction or dependency on carbs that is simply gone after a while. I remember taking bites of pizza pre keto (insert your favorite carb here) and instead of being satisfied, feeling that pull of wanting another bite and another. It was how smokers describe the first hit of a cigarette when you are trying to quit and have not smoked for a couple of days. It is much harder to stop after the first hit of nicotine. Now I can have a bite of bread or ice cream and it is just that, a bite, it satisfies the visual mental need which I still have but I have no desire for another bite and I often spit out the first bite if I am alone because I realize it is not as good as I remember

I am the person who lived on cereal, pizza, pasta and bagels in my 20s, I have never liked meat all that much and I despise fish in anything except sushi. I think I actually eat less meat now than before keto. Many nights I have a small snack of nuts or cheese and do not want anything else.

I do sometimes get a sweet tooth but then recipes like this work https://www.sugarfreemom.com/recipes/keto-low-carb-cinnamon-rolls-sugar-free-almond-flour-free/

There are great cheese cake recipes and carrot cake as well. After 16 months on keto I have yet to bother making a fat bomb. I like fathead pizza and the fact that it is fairly labor intensive to make limits my doing it to only when I am really in the mood. I like the DietDoctor.com version the best. I think having acceptable substitutes for bread and pizza really helped me get over the hump of not having most carbs. It seemed like knowing I could made me not crave it as much

Interesting. A lot of people here are talking of extreme addiction to carbs and I have not had it in a while also pre-keto. There’s been a period when I did actually eat tons of carbs and you could easily say I was badly addicted, and that’s how I got so fat. But I’ve been eating “normal” for years, without willing to, the drive to eat carbs just fell away on its own. The problem was that even after some time eating “normal” my weight wasn’t changing at all. That’s why I began keto+fasting. Now keto does give a lot of peace of mind and it’s lowered my appetite a great deal. I eat really little these days, between the ADF and just not being too enthusiastic.about the food. So I am not saying there aren’t differences. On a normal diet I would get awfully hungry eating this little. Anyway, we have all different stories and unique bodies. I hope that by restricting carbs now I am not going to reactivate the addiction. That would be a big screwup.
