Cream cheese. See this in a lot of fat bomb rec. But it is dairy and thought dairy was not keto… Some people say yes and some say no
Cream cheese thoughts
Dairy is…complicated. It’s fairly low carb, and high fat. I think the “problem” that many people have is that dairy is inflammatory. Lots of people here use it and eat it.
Dairy is not carnivore. It’s fine for keto. If you have problems avoid it, if not don’t. There are many cheeses, especially hard and aged but some soft cheeses, that are zero carb. Walmart’s Great Value cream cheese has half the carbs as Philly, 3.3 per 100 grams vs 6.6 per 100.
EDIT: Re cream cheese. I’m in Canada, if you’re in the US see the next post by @KetoCancerMom . The numbers I quote are based on the product available in Canada, see my photos of the respective nutrition labels below to compare with those provided by @KetoCancerMom .
Philly lists 0 total carbs but 1 gram of sugar per 15 grams. Something’s fishy there. I count that as 1 gram of carb. So 2 per 30 grams, which is the serving size of Great Value’s. Thus double the carbs. I’m in Canada, so different here from wherever you are.
Hey, that’s great to know… Its also half the price, which is why we buy it (by the truck load lol My GF could survive on fat bombs ! I have to “talk her into” eating a plate of beef… Yea, she’s kind of weird… maybe why shes with me in the first place
lol
I"m in Canada and apparently both GV and Philly have slightly different recipies, so if you’re in the US check out the above post by @KetoCancerMom
Thanks for that. I usually forget to mention that they are figures from the US. Its always good to put that in, so there is less confusion!
Dairy is certainly keto, at least as long as it’s high-fat and low-carb (check the nutrition label for the item in question).
But there are generally two problems people have with dairy. The first is being unable to tolerate lactose. In children, there is an enzyme called lactase that gets produced to help them deal with the milk sugars, but in most of the human race, adults have lost their ability to produce lactase (it disappears at some point after weaning). Unless you have one of the two mutations that allow people to produce lactase in adulthood (they appeared in the Maasai in Africa and in the population of Northern Europe), you are going to have trouble with dairy.
Heavy cream does not contain much lactose, but it contains some. Butter contains some, but clarified butter/ghee contains no lactose. And the longer a cheese is aged, the less lactose it will contain.
The other problem, which is independent of lactose-intolerance, is a reaction to one or another of the milk proteins. The symptoms can vary, and the easiest way to test for such a reaction is to cut out dairy altogether for several weeks. If you notice a distinct improvement in how you feel, then perhaps dairy is not for you.
@TheTom67
Already some good responses. I’ll just add that when I first Started Keto, I thought the softer spreadable cream cheese was the same as regular cream cheese, just whipped up. A couple brands I’ve noticed have higher carbs though, so keep a lookout.
I have not had a problem with dairy, at least not that I know of. (Who knows what would happen if I stop dairy intake? I’ll save that for a long stall, perhaps.)
But your comment about the mutation got me curious. My DNA is showing I have two alleles, that when combined, indicate a high likelihood of lactose intolerance. Thanks for mentioning that. You’re a fount of information.
So, something for me to think about.
That said, I just set out a block of cream cheese to make cheesecake.
LOL! Genetics isn’t always destiny, since we are finding that environmental factors have more of an influence than used to be believed. But lactose intolerance in adulthood is the human default and is nearly universal among all mammals. It’s one of the reasons that rats and mice don’t love cheese nearly as much as the stereotype has it (although hard, well-aged chesses generally don’t have all that much lactose).
On the other hand, my pet rats love yoghurt and whipped cream, but they can’t have too much of it. (Like people, they tend to really enjoy the stuff that’s not so good for them, lol!)
