Crap. I relapsed. 12 steps, anyone?!

(Robin Weitzman) #1

Well, there yah have it. I can’t eat around non-keto people, at least for awhile. I cracked. Wheat is literally like crack. I even ate first! My heart was pounding and everything! Wow. Stupid carbs being as addictive as cocaine! Uggghhhhhh

What is your strategy for next time when you are faced with the same situation? Because…there will be a next time. So, be prepared. What other decisions are at your disposal to make when faced with this again?

We are all only one step away from a lapse, but for some the step is only a small one. I have been eating this way for 9 weeks. I would never take anything for granted but my cravings have disappeared and I believe the chance of me lapsing is small.

Accepting that everyone is different, and your experience will be different from mine, my advice would be to put all your effort into avoiding high risk situations for a few weeks. Allow you body to get used to low carbs and high fat. You may find that your tolerance for high carb environments increases.

My second bit of advice is that if you know you are heading for a place where there will be the carbs to temp you, eat a good fatty meal before you go. If you are already satisfied, this may help strengthen your resolve.

My strategy at this point is to not eat around others, and to eat a hell of a lot more before I go over dinner somewhere.

Man. Those carbs had me out all night though. I don’t sleep well in ketosis. Suggestions?!

??? I’ve got nothing. For me I had sleep apnea on non-Keto diet. I’d usually wake up at least once a night. The rest would not be a deep sleep and I’d wake up tired to begin the day. After ~2 months my sleep patterns are so much better. When I sleep I am out! I wake rested and thus need less sleep. I’ve also cranked up my cardio exercise as well. Better sleep means more day time and leaves an extra hour for the cardio.

This. ^^^

My strategy was fasting. Had a family gathering this weekend, and I knew that there would be stuff I’d want to eat. Started fasting on Thursday night, and ended the fast this morning.

I can’t say I had no temptations, but since I was fasting, there was no slippery slope.

I can’t sleep well. It’s pretty common in ketosis. It bugs me. I hope it will sort itself out

I figured out the trigger. That lead to a slippery slope yesterday. Man. Well. Time to not do that again. I feel hung over in a weird way today. Good thing I made a bunch of mayo and pork belly today for the week.

Just saw this. Common for you unfortunately, but it should change once you become well fat adapted. That could take weeks, or months. It won’t happen if you carb load though.

As far as interrupted sleep being common while in ketosis? After three years ketogenic, and literally watching thousands of ketopians, the opposite is the norm.
Most find their sleep is more fulfilling, deeper, and they need less!

I hope this eventually for you.

As far as sleeping like the dead after you carb loaded? Exactly.

Not good.
