Covid brain and “brain food”

(Robin) #21

Well, I’ll be an n=1 for you! Unless I forget…? Either way, you’ll know the results!

(Bob M) #22

Let us know.

Yes for training it’s recommended to do 5g a day with a 10g daily loading dose if required. I’ve always used two heaped scoops a day which is about 15g total. The info I’ve heard regarding cognitive benefits has been on the Mind Pump podcast which said 10g a day for cognitive benefits and that’s what has kept me on the two daily scoops. I mix with a scoop of electrolyte powder too.

So its all the fish that makes me nuts

(Bob M) #25

I’d retry my creatine, which I mistakenly ordered two huge bags of. However, once I tried it for a while and didn’t find much benefit for muscles (possibly because I get enough eating beef/pork/chicken), I threw it all away. Bummer.

The belief that walnuts are “brainfood” is ancient and based on the similarity between a walnut and a brain (two halves, winding, ridges).

Studies showing blueberry consumption is beneficial are, to the best of my knowledge, all sponsored by, you guessed it, blueberry growers.

Those studies invariably don’t (fully) account for healthy user bias (generally folks eating blueberries are richer, better educated, eat less junkfood, smoke less), so I’d take that with a grain of salt

#27

I view it as one of those “can’t hurt” things. Cheap, safe and probably beneficial.
Like the teaspoon of cod liver oil or the magnesium supplement I also take

#28

You may be right. And yes- I had noticed the resemblence of the walnut to the grey matter anatomy, hard not to!

But in my case however, I eat berries (mainly blueberries and strawberries only) as they are the only fruits recommended (apart from avocado) by the Keto experts on Youtube (Phinney et al), and walnuts, pecans and maccademia nuts also come recommended by the Keto nutritionists.
I think the fat in the sour cream also balances the low glycemic release of carbs from the berries and low carb walnuts…so perfect for keto in moderation.

For me, in moderation, they are an occasional tasty diversion away from the normally savoury diet of keto (don’t get me wrong, I love savoury the best!).

#29

I love fruit, though berries are kinda expensive. Fortunately I have a high “carb threshold”, I can eat quite a lot of carbs and still be in ketosis, so my mid afternoon snack is an orange or some other juicy fruit.

Also a banana in the homemade kefir with cream, fermented overnight. It’s like melted ice cream!
I’m trying not to lose weight (I have some health stuff going on, pulmonary cachexia is the nerdy term) and that stuff is amazing. And way healthier than frankenfood nutritional supplements like Nutrilon drinks. Ugh!

I’m on a low omega six fatty acids side quest, so no nuts or seeds for me

#30

Yes, I have to say that I miss some fruits, but am very happy that berries are still kosher on the keto.
To be honest, I would have had a lot of berries before going on keto anyway…but I miss the apple, beetroot, banana, carrot mixture etc. smoothies I used to make.
Yeah, best to get your omega 3 from other sources than nuts. Walnuts have high omega 3, but also fairly high in omega 6. Oily fish would be best.
Sorry to hear about your condition- I hope you repair well and respond well to treatment.
“banana in the homemade kefir with cream, fermented overnight”…sounds interesting!
I’ve always wanted to experiment with making kefir…I have never even tasted it.

I have been having goat’s milk kefir. It seems to be a thicker, more tart version of the goat’s milk yogurt I’m having. I’ve been using these to take my collagen peptides.

Basically all fruits is fine on keto if one is able eat them in moderation and it causes no problems for them…
I preferred banana and raspberry and sour cherry.
Now I prefer lemon but I ate and eat almost every fruits if I fancy them (or just have them galore in my garden. I have everything I like and can have here. like raspberries in 4 different colors :D).
I don’t think I realistically can eat melons and dates on keto, even I have my limits. The others are possible. Including dried fruits though I very rarely eat them.
On my original keto I could afford a few grams net carbs for my fruits, it’s different now that my staples are way lower-carb.

I liked kefir in the past but I think I stay a greek yogurt but mostly sour cream type  Those are about as sour just not so watery.

Different foods are different, but we know certain ones can absolutely without question GIVE us brain fog, whether secondary because of inflammation or not. Makes perfect sense others can help. Way to test the waters (somewhat) would be some sort of nootropic, whether it be something like exogenous ketones, kratom, lions mane, or if you’re not a recovered smoker, nicotine gum. Any of those (should) put your brain into 100% focus for a while, while that won’t show you what blueberries may do, it would show you that whatever is causing it, can be dealt with.

A lot of people are also dealing with covid brain fog with Loratadine and Famotadine, (Claratin and Pepcid) which seems to be helping a lot of people, they’re not 100% sure why though. So far there’s a LOT of drugs that have been repurposed and helping COVID leftovers.

#34

Wow, which ones? I don’t think I ever met such things. My brain doesn’t really care about how I eat as far as I can tell… I don’t say there is surely nothing but I never noticed it and there are WAY more important factors in my case (time of the day, sleep, weather) so the minimal effect of food isn’t noticeable.

#35

You didn’t have a lot more mental calrity after going keto? I felt like I was high I was so focused, even now doing CKD/TKD with the carbs I eat daily, if I eat complete crap ones like when I give in to the kids garbage dinners, and I’m pretty sure eating things fried in poison oil, I’m not right for days after.

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #36

I take Claritin, and it seems to have no effect on brain function whatsoever. I guess there must be a lot of individual variation in these matters.

#37

I can find that stack that had those in it, I know it wasn’t being taken in the doses you would for allergies. I think it’s also the combo (I think) that people were doing.

#38

No. I experienced about zero change on keto… Carnivore is different but my brain feels the same as on high-carb as far as I can tell…

(Robin) #39

@lfod14… I have been incredibly clearheaded and focus and energetic (physically and mentally) since first going keto (1st year) and now Carni (a few days shy of another year).
And the brim doc and short term memory loss hit 6 weeks after covid. Interestingly, that is a common timeline for many long covid people.

I can’t imagine that as a faithful carnivore I am eating anything that would make things worse. What is left to eliminate?

For now, I am placing all my bets on it improving over time. And I’m going to add that Creatinine, because why not. :slightly_smiling_face:

(Allie) #40

I didn’t notice any change either so never understood what was meant when people talked about it, until I had to have some hefty antibiotics after a horsefly bite and they messed me up enough to make my head all fuzzy. This showed me exactly what I had been missing and it’s not something I’d like to repeat.
