Counting veggie carbs

(Mary) #21

Very inspiring! So even if I don’t quite get it right as far as macros and ketosis goes, as long as I cut the carbs I should still lose. Feels very doable! Thanks!

Ahaaaaaaaaa, a steak with a candle in it - happy ketoversary, Mary!

I too seem to have three separate chronic pain conditions that are only ameliorated by going plant free. I’m alway curious about others who have found that they are similarly sensitive. What has going plant free helped you with specifically, if you don’t mind sharing?

This is fully dependant on your current metabolic condition. Some people can lose at 80 grams of carbs a day but there are plenty of people who can’t even lose at 20 net grams, which is why keto physicians such as Dr. Westman use total carbs instead. There are even people for whom nothing works except regular fasting.

Also, most people with some significant amount of fat to lose might initially have losses just cutting carbs but will eventually stall their weight loss without some form of tighter restriction.

This was me, and it’s fairly common. I started what’s referred to as “lazy keto” at 133 lbs, about 30 lbs from my goal. I very easily lost the first third of that eating all the vegetables I wanted and going way, way over 20 grams of net carbs every single day. But this did stall out eventually and I had to tighten up both my carbs and my eating window to finally achieve my current weight.

I quite agree, I experienced this.
It was so easy to lose fat on low-carb (80g net carbs) when I had more to lose. At one point it stopped, no matter what I did, I couldn’t lose more. Even keto didn’t help with that, I ate the same amount as before and barely maintained just the same.
But I suspect I just need to do extreme low-carb (it seems only net matters to me but if I eat low net, I eat low total anyway). And exercise as lower and lower carbs and fat adaptation makes small miracles but I can’t eat little, no matter what. And my body don’t waste precious fat reserves without a need. Anyway, my main priorities are health and joy and I need exercise for both.

Some people have it easier or harder. People lose fat on high-carb too (for some people, HCHF is the only option for some reason and it gives quick results though hunger is present. people are amazingly different). And some lucky ones gets slim easily using one or two simple rules. Or not easily at all but they are “strong” and suffer. I am not willing to do that, I rather chose the ideal woe for 10 years while being borderline overweight. I need my close to ideal woe anyway, for long term health and joy. I am even glad I didn’t get results on a less ideal woe.

So even our priritities and attitude are way different and some of us can’t do it simple right away. I needed 9 years to go from 80g to 5-10g net carbs. It’s not even two different worlds, they are multiple worlds apart from my viewpoint. But I never ate this simple. It’s great. (I can complicate it if I want.)
Our keto easily may evolve, sometimes a lot but some of us just can’t do sudden super drastic changes (it’s very individual what super drastic is).

Some get really cought up in tracking and measuring. I did this on a caloric deficit plan (MFP) and drove everyone around me crazy but it did work, until it didn’t. I hated counting and logging so I stopped thinking I had re-trained myself on how to eat properly. I also eased up on my exercise of running thirty plus miles a week.
I said hello to thirty of the 50 pounds I lost when I started keto. I haven’t bothered to log anything but I do have a real good grasp of how many carbs are in foods I eat. I get 20g to 30g from foods and about 20g from wine. I can usually tell if I am in ketosis by taste, a metallic taste in my mouth.
I say limit carbs to 20g but don’t stress about it, embrace healthy fats, eat adequate protein. You will need to be honest about this and not eat worthless carbs. It can be difficult at first but it does get easier. No snacking! If you must snack to get through a rough patch eat Macadamia nuts or pork rinds but you should see this urge pass as you become fat adapted. Follow this for several weeks and see what the scale does.

Veggie carbs are often referred to as incidental carbs. You will likely get about 5g to 10g per meals. My breakfast is about 1g, lunch maybe 6g and dinner about 10g. (without the wine)

I had severe pain in every joint in my body except jaw and spine and also in some muscles and bones. Also osteo starting to show on xrays as well as damage from old accidents.
Kept under control most of the time with prescription painkiller and anti-inflametries.
Just over a year ago (Dec 18) I failed a fasting BG test. I must have been reading something about fasting and BG level and decided to see how long I could go without eating after the overnight fast I had to do for a BGT test I then had to do. Anyway, I ended going 4 days and on day 2 my BG dropped and the pain went away for the first time in about 5-7 years when I was briefly pain free. The pain started 16-17 years ago.
A week or 2 later I went to the Dr to get new scripts and when he tested my joint strength and range of motion he refused to write more scripts. At the time I was terrified. I only had a few weeks worth of pills left. A year later and I still have most of them sitting here in a draw. I took 1 tramadol a week or so ago When my damaged joints and also toes and finger flared up after getting a cold.
I didn’t go keto until April and carnivore until a few months ago. In hindsight I should have gone carnivore from day one, but I had a lot of brainwashing to undo and a big time and money investment in eating fruit and veggies.
I have other condition that might be helped too, like A-FIB and psoriasis, but they tend to cycle, so I’m not sure if carnivore if helping or I’m just lucky ATM  and maybe other minor issues that I forgot about or didn’t notice much because the joint problems were so bad.
Range of motion in the joints was also important. That improved when I cut back carbs. I had become accident prone because of restricted joint movement. To the point where a nurse recommended that I joint a support group for people like that. Who would have thought there was such a thing.
There could be other things, but these are the important carb related ones.

ps: my weight dropped again this morning for a new 20 year low record.

Wow. Incredible story. My own pain is all neurological. I also was on narcotics for many years. And all that pain just goes away if I stay away from pretty much everything but meat. It’s still sort of freaking me out a bit.
