Could this cause an insulin spike?

(What else is there to talk about?) #1

Might be a silly question but…Is it possible that carbonated water with natural fruit flavour could cause an insulin spike?

My guess: no. Without a meter, though, it’s hard to tell.

It’s possible, usually to a very small extent. Even just thinking about food and/or the time of day can cause some increase in insulin - the “cephalic effect.”

If it does increase insulin, then blood sugar will decline, even if just a little, and the body will feel less need for insulin as a result. If blood sugar goes low enough, the secretion of glucagon will result and then we have the body actively counter-regulating things the other way.

I guess it matters what we are calling a “spike.” The amount of insulin increase will be different for different people, if it goes up at all.

Not in a million years. Realize there’s a difference between causing a blood sugar rise, an insulin response and an insulin SPIKE, many people are VERY loose with that term. Most things we eat even the things that do cause an insulin response cause nowhere near a spike.

You’re right. I meant an insulin response. I drink about 3 bottles per day and don’t want to ruin any benefits I’m getting from being Keto by drinking this. I don’t have a meter to test this.

Wouldn’t worry about it. We constantly secrete insulin, if we didn’t we’d die. There’s nothing bad in there. You can check sugar as a proxy, but still pointless as far as I’m concerned. The higher your insulin goes the lower your sugar goes.

If that soda contained an artificial sweetener, there’s a chance that the sweetener might actually cause a spike in insulin, but the label you posted mentions no such thing. I think you’re safe.

Do you really need three litres of water a day, however? I hate to see people doing things because some marketer told them they had to, instead of listening to their body. If you’re having a good time drinking 3 litres a day, then ignore me and my biases; but if you have to work to force that much water down, feel free to consider not drinking if you’re not thirsty.

It’s been quite hot here lately so I really do need it. As the weather gets colder, I won’t be drinking as much.

It’s all good, then. :+1:

Thank you all for taking the time to respond.
