Cough drops

(Mike W.) #1

Any reason why you wouldn’t take these when you’re sick? Not ideal, but ok?

Those are the kind I take when I have a cough, hasn’t caused any issues for me

(Mike W.) #3

Thank you.

(Allie) #4

I’ll see if I can find me some tomorrow as this cough is driving me mad. I’m supposed to be sleeping but can’t stop coughing :weary:

(Mike W.) #5

These were from Target if it helps. Almost threw up in bed last from coughing. This sucks. Hope you feel better soon.

(Allie) #6

Thanks Mike but I’m in the UK and no Target here. I have seen them before though so hoping to be able to track them down.

I got these yesterday but they’re vile and don’t stop the cough.

(Caryl) #7

There are sugar-free Strepsils in the UK, which are tolerable. Other cough drops I have seen all have fructose, glucose and sucrose in them.

Those Ricola Mountain Herb lozenges look amazing - I am going to track some down.

I also drink Greek Mountain Tea when I have a cold or a cough.

I found them yesterday and got excited, strawberry flavour… sweetened with maltitol! They went back on the shelf.

I’ve got a Boots chemist and Holland & Barrett both close to my work so will go there at lunchtime.

(Hyperbole- best thing in the universe!) #9

Huh, I haven’t seen the stevia ones. I also saw the maltitol ones, and like @Shortstuff put them right back on the shelf.

Also, Fisherman’s Friend, what are you thinking‽ Menthol and black currant are not compatible flavors!

I used to use the original ones on long teaching days when I talk a lot. I haven’t needed anything in a while, but it would be nice to have an option, just in case.

(Caryl) #10

Maltitol is a sugar alcohol that does not trigger a sudden spike of insulin, so I am ok with it.

(Hyperbole- best thing in the universe!) #11

It seems to spike insulin almost as bad as sugar for many people. Other sugar alcohols seem to do better. But glad it works for you!

(Mike W.) #12

My wife said that there were two different Ricola. One was sweetened with Aspartame. I’m thinking the Stevia ones are newer. Just want to make sure you grab the right ones!

(Allie) #13

No they’re not. They’re vile. But the only option without either sugar or maltitol

(Allie) #14

Actually maltitol is one of the worst offenders that causes massive insulin spikes and severe digestive upsets in most people. It is the worst of the sugar alcohols which is why so many of us avoid it.

Sounds like you need to skip the drops and get something with the cough suppressant “Dextromethorphan” as the main ingredient. Commonly found in cough “syrups” (Deslym is the name brand time-released version) but I think they make tablets too. Plain non “medicine” cough drops offer only marginal help in my experience.

(Hyperbole- best thing in the universe!) #17

But there’s a bull on the box! It has to be good keto medicine.

(Allie) #18

They do work, until they’re gone and then I start to cough again.

(Allie) #19

I bought a syrup too but it doesn’t work :slightly_frowning_face:
