Costco Question/Assistance, Please

#21

Hi LeeAnn, thanks for responding!

I’m able to drive now, thank goodness. But I still don’t have a membership. One of the things I would DEFINITELY buy there are the hemp hearts. My local Costco, however, doesn’t carry them (I called) and there’s no “ship-to-store” option. That really sucks, since other Costcos carry them, but the nearest one that has them is 100 miles away. Currently I get them through Amazon, but the price! Lordy mercy me!

If you’d be willing to put in to management that you’re hearing complaints from customers about not being able to get at THEIR Costco items that are available at other Costcos, and that ship-to-store would be great so they could get those items, I would really appreciate that!

Costco is great for bulk purchasing of the limited items they carry on a “wholesale to the public” business model; however, they are not a boutique, high-touch retailer that will cater to special individual needs like Neiman Marcus. If you expect that, you will be disappointed.

Also, you are asking someone who graciously replied to you to relay a complaint “from customers” based on an unreasonable expectation, and you are not even a customer. So you are asking them to lie on your behalf.
Suggest you refrain from asking people to lie or complaining about any firm with which you’ve not done business. The probability that Costco will revise it’s ship-to-store policy based on a complaint from a non-member is 0.00%

I agree about Amazon’s prices being so low that local businesses have a hard time competing. That you can order an item for the lowest price on the planet and have it delivered for free the next day is amazing.

Wow, thanks for calling me a liar and also basically calling me stupid.

I had a membership years ago. Not that I owe you any explanation or that it’s any of your business.

Obviously you have some kind of problem, but the problem isn’t me. If I’m not mistaken, they have a “don’t be a jerk” rule here. Perhaps you should back away from the computer for awhile.

Total overreaction, and totally uncalled for.

Have a nice evening.

First of all, I don’t take any offense to the request, however it isn’t something Costco would ever consider. It actually goes against Costco’s business strategy.
Let me try to explain: the thing people love about Costco (other than their amazing employees😉) are the quality of products we carry at the prices we carry them for. In order to do that we have to do one main thing. Keep overhead low.
We don’t ship store to store. We don’t do extended hours. We don’t do all the bells and whistles other retailers do. Our CEO doesn’t take home million dollar salary.
Instead we focus on giving the best costomer service under this basic structure. And for the most part, we do a great job at it. Costco has zero advertising budget. It’s all word of mouth, and that’s made us the second largest retailer in the world.
Here’s what Costco does by keeping the overhead low. They guarantee no item in the store will be marked up more than 15%. Sam’s will never offer such a guarantee. Because of that, they will often discount their membership, since they will make it up in product sales at 40% markup or more. It also means Costco can’t price match other stores because stores often put an item at a loss to bring traffic into the store, knowing they will make it up with other items that have been marked way up. This is called a loss leader, and Costco finds it unethical so we don’t ever do it.
I know I’m explaining a lot, but those who don’t know the great things Costco has to offer often look at the things Costco doesn’t do in comparison with other retailers without understanding why it’s so important to maintaining what Costco is.

But I still think you should really consider becoming a member. Like I said, your membership is guaranteed, so if you try us for a year and don’t feel you got your value out of your membership, just ask for a refund before the year is up. It’s literally risk free. We also guarantee satisfaction on everything we sell. Just a few time restrictions on certain electronics, but if you are t happy with your meat or produce or anything else, just bring it back.

Here’s what I buy Keto there: bulk coconut oil, avacado oil, eggs, bacon, pork belly, nuts, cheese.

Right now our gas is selling $.20 cheaper than anyone else locally (except Sam’s which is in a gas price war with us). Most members will tell you the price of gas alone pays for the annual membership.

And here’s an idea that may help with your hemp hearts. No promises though. While it’s up to a regional buyer what each Costco sells in his or her region, the warehouse has some room to make requests to the buyer. They will only do this if they feel there is strong local demand. You have to understand that a Costco only carries about 4,000 products at any given time (compared to 200,000 at supermarkets). So we can’t give in to every members request. But my store had gotten in a couple things based on member requests. So if you have friends who are members at your Costco, you could start a suggestion campaign. Fill out a suggestion card every time you are in and have your friends fill it out too. If they see there is enough local demand, they may contact their buyer.
I can’t do this for you as it must be locally generated. And I wouldn’t because I don’t purchase hemp hearts so it would be inappropriate for me to ask for them. But I do encourage you to try if you become a member.

One last thing, ask your Costco if they carry them seasonally. Seasonally to Costco means something a little different than most places. Because of our limited ability to carry a lot of items, many are deemed seasonal which means we only carry them a few months out of the year. So we cycle many items. It could just be that they don’t have them right now but will later.

Hope this helps. As you may be able to tell, I really love my company. It’s the best I’ve ever had experience with and I love sharing it with others. Certainly not everyone will feel the same, but with the membership guarantee, it’s well worth trying.

Another major Costco fan, and only two in our household. Portion and freeze meats and organic vegetables works for us. Wanted to add in many markets Costco now offers 2 delivery for non perishables and same day for perishables via InstaCart. Enter Zip to see if available to you.

Our FoodSaver is indispensable due to Costco meats!

Hey @Anniegirl9 - your positive attitude is infectious and why it’s so great to visit Costco. I like how, no matter how busy and crowded it gets, none of the Costco team members ever seem to be having a bad day, and that gets transferred to the customers/members. I think it reflects the quality and practices of the management and training - what do think is the secret (besides hiring good people, of course)?

(LeeAnn Brooks) #28

Well, we all have bad days now and then, but overall we do really love our company and it shows through. It all boils down to having a feeling that your company values and respects you. Costco does this in so many ways that it’s hard not to love them back. And the members feel it, as you do obviously point out, which just makes it better all the way around.

I used to work at a dealership and Ford had a training/survey program because they found through research that the # 1 criteria for good customer experience is through good employee satisfaction. Too bad they (the dealership I worked for) couldn’t find a way to translate that. And most companies haven’t caught on at all.

@Anniegirl9 I heard that when the CEO and Sr executives visit a store, they put 100% of their attention on the staff and none on the customers, based on the idea that if we take care of our staff, they will take care of our customers. Is that true?

(LeeAnn Brooks) #30

Well, I’ve never heard the rationale behind it, but yeah, Craig Jelink is the CEO and he’s been to our store twice since we opened in 2014. Once for the grand opening. He interacted with members and employees, but he definately made a point to get to meet all the employees. He does this thing where any employee can write their guess for opening day sales on a dollar bill. You have to give it to him when you meet him and he gives the $ to the employee who comes closest.
The second time was last year. Whenever he comes it’s pretty exciting. He’s a bit of a rock star in Costco world, and he lets us take selfies with him.
