Constant Muscle Twitching

(Anina) #1

Hello, I am new to the forum - I have been eating Keto for 6 weeks. Before I started Keto my right calf and shin muscles were always quick to cramp when swimming or at night after a run. On Keto I have not been able to fix this, though keto has eliminated all joint pain I had.

I have noticed additional muscle twitching in my other large muscles, quads, gluteus maximus, biceps and today around my face.

I am drinking at least one electrolyte drink a day (Sqwincher Zero), 200mg of Potassium gluconate, 300mg of Magnesium Citrate, 1 kelp tablet. I put crystals of Peruvian Pink Salt on my tongue a couple of times a day, and salt my food freely.

A couple of times I have drank home-made chicken broth, but not noticed much relief.

I realize some things pass and I have not been eating this way very long.
Any advice?
Thanks!

More electrolytes. The amount you’re getting really isn nowhere near what’s needed.

Okay, good at least I have something to start with, should I double up and go from there?
I am eating spinach and avocado daily, but I will start with doubling my supplements. I had wicked foot cramping this morning and I havent even been excercising - I really want to fix this!

Thanks!

There’s no set amount, but hopefully this will help you

Thanks Allie,
The link was very helpful.
I did have foot cramping before Keto, but it just seems to be worse now.
I think my body is healing itself, so I am okay working through it and feel good otherwise,
I am going to focus on cleansing my liver with some supplements and through food choices(avocado is there every day), and give my body some more time to balance.

I was doing tonnes of electrolyte drinks (sugar-free), peruvian salt, potassium pills and magnesium pills.
I was 4 months into Keto and was reading about healthy livers and if your liver isnt healthy, then you wont be able to absorb minerals well. So I stopped taking the supplements and:sunglasses: started taking liver pills (grass-fed), and 2 months later I have not suffered from calf cramps or muscle twitching for over a month.
So either it was the Liver pills, or just more time for my body to adjust to Keto.

Hey SmilingAboutKeto, your symptoms sounded super similar to what I have been dealing with for awhile now. I’m curious what type of liver pills did you take. I see some people going the herbal route and others taking the grass-fed liver pills? Looking forward to the reply XD

Hello, this is my one year anniversary of starting a keto lifestyle. I am still struggling with cramping in my right calf, but I train for triathlons and my new thought is that I am physically unbalanced so I am working on balancing my workouts to fix that.
I don’t regret taking the liver pills I took grass fee pressed pills first and suffered through swallowing them! So the next bottle was dried grass fed in capsules. I looked at buying the liver and drying myself but I am not there yet.
For twitching I carry a little container of Peruvian pink rock salt and just pop some in my mouth with food or water and it has been the perfect quick fix.
Good luck in your journey, I am so happy that I found keto, I think I intuitively knew that real fat made me feel good and flour products did not, the keto way of eating has improved the quality of my life and the nay-sayers last year when I started are now asking me questions about how to start.

I had the same issue yesterday with twitching in my biceps. It was kinda freaky. What did you do to stop this? Thank you!

Hi - I have Redmonds Real Salt in a jar, and I will pinch some up and put it under my tongue, that helps short term. Electrolyte drinks are helpful as well, especially if you are in the first 6 months of your Keto journey.
I also take Magnesium, I found the best way for me is to take the powder in hot water before bed.
I am 18 months in and my weight is not changing but I am still loosing inches, which is think is my body fixing long term inflamation, which was probably full of toxins - and I dont have twitching issues anymore - just some calf cramping on occasion.
Good Luck!
