Confused by breath meter reading today - Alcohol? Tonic water?

#1

Crap! I went to a Christmas party last night and I did SO GOOD!!! I ate nothing when the food was put out, felt no desire or hunger so didn’t bother. I had three drinks, and did well there, too: I only used a tiny bit of vodka, added some Mio water flavoring, and topped off the glass with tons of ice and the rest with seltzer. Felt very proud of myself and felt great all night.

This morning I was curious as to whether or not the small amounts of vodka threw me out of ketosis. The meter is beeping with a high number! It’s never done that before! So, two questions:

Am i expelling a lot of ketones or is that the alcohol in my system triggering the result?

And here’s the bad news (I think): my husband used tonic water for my second two drinks instead of seltzer water. I just googled it and tonic water is HIGH IN CARBS!!! ACK!!! All that behaving and I may have been sabotaged by tonic water! (which I had no idea had carbs in it).

So why is my meter showing such a high result? Did I not sabotage myself or is it the vodka still in my breath?

I think some of the breath meters are dual purpose ketones and alcohol

Yes, they are, but do I have alcohol in/on my breath 12 hours later? Guess I won’t know if I knocked myself out of ketosis till tomorrow then. Or I will try a urine stick, but I know those aren’t very reliable.

I can drink a ton and be in ketosis the next am. No mixers. A glass or two or wine. Bourbon is good for you. My blood sugar is higher the following day no matter what i eat the day following alcohol.

Tonic water has more sugar than pretty much any soda. Run from it. If I order a vodka soda and get a vodka tonic it gets sent back.

Don’t blame the vodka for what the tonic did.

I am SO P/SSED about the tonic water!!! You would think that anything with the name “water” in it that also tastes bad would be low in carbs. When I Googled the nutritional content of it today I was shocked, and angry! What a stupid way to accidentally put so many carbs in my body! Damn it!

The only positive I can find to this is that I have learned yet another thing about this way of eating. I mean, I know I can’t go reading the fine print on the back of a bottle at a host’s party, but I know now to run from tonic water.

I also feel like total crap today and I didn’t drink that much vodka so I’m guessing it’s the friggin’ tonic! Ggggrrrrr.

I know, I know, KCKO, but if I ever got carbed, I figured it would be an intentional splurge, not a stupid mistake. Getting back on the wagon, even though tomorrow is yet another family feast. I’m determined to get back into ketosis ASAP.
