Confused. Atkins

the. Back of the box says 18g of carbs per serving the front says 2g wth

(Michael - When reality fails to meet expectations, the problem is not reality.) #2

If they can’t even get their story straight between the front and back of the same box, I recommend you don’t eat this stuff. Who knows what’s really in there?

(Robert C) #3

Nope @TheTom67 - the front says “2G NET CARBS” (they would get in trouble saying “2 grams of carbs” as it would directly contradict the back of the box).

  • The back of the box is controlled by the government and must list all of the carbs.
  • The front of the box is not controlled by the government and simply states an opinion.

In this case the company’s opinion is that all of the carbs in a serving stated on the back of the box will only affect your body like you had 2 grams of sugar - so they chose to call that “2G NET CARBS” on the front of the box.

Probably best not to use net carb numbers from sources that will financially benefit from that number being low (i.e. all businesses attempting to look Keto or “low carb” friendly - just use net carb numbers for real whole foods).

(Cancer Fighting Ketovore :)) #4

They are not counting the carbs from the sugar alcohols and fiber. If you look at the back of the box (or side) it probably explains that somewhere. Still, if you look at the list of ingredients, it’s best to avoid it, if at all possible.

All the Strict types and the MCT oil swillers will discourage you but I am sure they are better for you staying keto than slamming down a Reese’s PBC. The real question is about maltitol, the #1 ingredient. Here is one opinion. https://www.healthline.com/health/food-nutrition/is-maltitol-safe#1

NOW I HAVE TASTED THESE BAD BOYS AND THEY ARE DELICIOUS.

There is also the matter of polydextrose (see http://www.theketoplate.com/ode-to-polydextrose/ )

I sure wouldn’t say —ok, 2 g each I can eat 10 of these and a ribeye each day and all is good.

But one of them every so often isn’t going to kill you. It probably won’t kick you out of keto if you have had really good eating habits.

SO don’t sweat it if someone comes along and points out all the chemistry on the label and freaks out.

Not everyone eats steak and spinach every day.

Heck, they are probably okay to chop up and put in a chaffle.

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #6

In general, it is far healthier to avoid processed foods and stick with the real stuff. Processed as in cheese and bacon is fine, but not as in “contains fifteen ingredients your great-grandmother never heard of.”

Maltitol, sorbitol, nutritionally behave like real sugar,
Sucarlose, ace k, aspartame are non nutritional and have varied responses depending on person but for the most part are 0 in most senses
Erythritol, inulin should be treated like fiber, too much of it causes distress but is suitable for keto
Monk fruit ,stevia, are best ones in my opinion

Not the best choice because of the fake ingredients… but my husband eats them every great once in a while and it has not affected him negatively. He is on maintenance so not trying to lose weight.

Better than caving in to a high carb food but I wouldn’t make a regular habit of them.

Three things to be concerned about when computing net carbs:

  • Fiber. Most forms are not digestible, so they can generally be subtracted out.
  • Sugar alcohols vary in digestibility. Some, like erythritol, can be subtracted out completely. Others, like Xylitol and Maltitol, still have over 2 calories per gram, so should really only be half-subtracted.
  • Allulose is a sugar, but has nearly no digestible component (1/10th that of regular sugar). But because it’s listed on nutritional labels as part of the carbohydrates, there’s no way to subtract it out. But most products using Allulose will state the net carbs on their packaging.

Also, be aware that most countries outside of the USA already subtract out non-digestible carbohydrates on their labels, so you would do no subtracting. That’s why you can sometimes find nutritional labels where there are more fiber grams than carbohydrate grams.

Having said that, I would compute the net carbs as:

18g carbs - 4g fiber - 12/2 sugar alcohols (maltitol) = 8 net carbs

They are calculating it as:

18g carbs - 4g fiber - 12 sugar alcohols (maltitol) = 2 net carbs

They’re junk whatever the carb count.

(bulkbiker) #11

If it comes in a box don’t eat it?

(Katie) #12

I read somewhere that Dr. Atkins sold all of his interest in the business. Now, it is just another for profit big business. Meaning: I wouldn’t trust them

There are so many wonderful desert fat bombs that you can make…why pay for junk you do not even know what they put in it?

(Robert C) #13

Don’t forget these important points also!

Just blindly doing Keto “net carbs” calculations opens the doors for other issues.

Do good carb counts help you if your microbiome is negatively affected?

Are you sitting at a plateau with one hand in a box of this stuff?

If you get an autoimmune disorder after eating artificial foods regularly and it goes away when you stop - can you assume they were part of the problem?

I think it is always best to start with real whole food Keto - get fat adapted and then (if you want) go “Dirty Keto” by adding fake foods. But, to be sure about the “Keto” part (i.e. being in ketosis on “Dirty Keto”) I think you have to measure the effects of each fake food you’re going to force your body to deal with to keep your mouth happy.

(Karen) #14

Bought these. Tried these. They’re OK but not great and kind of small. Won’t rebuy.

(Joey) #15

Perhaps the front of the package is meant for the Atkins induction phase and - by the time you get to the back of the box - hopefully you’ve reached Atkins maintenance?

Then again, given the name Endulge I was relieved to see it’s taken orally.

#16

Most of the time, that’s good advice…!

(bulkbiker) #17

Always an exception… and that I would happily eat!
They look amazing… guess from the USA?

(Ellen ) #18

Lol
