Concerning lab results

(Mandy) #1

Hey all,

Almost a year on keto, six months ago all my labs were normal. I had some done a few days ago and my doctor wants to talk. My creatinine is elevated and my egrf is low. I’m wondering if this could be from too much protein. I don’t really track anymore so I’m not sure how much I’m getting. The Google machine has me worried. I saw my doctor because I’m having what I can only describe as shortness of breath occasionally.

Some results.

Albumin : 4.3
BUN : 16
Creatinine : 1.2
Bilirubin : . 4
Protein : 7.4
eGFR : 50

I’m 5 months in. and some of my liver values have changed as well but the doc wrote some of it off as “weight loss” (I’ve lost less than 20lbs) and recommended follow up in 6 months. What “the Google” says and what doctors say are two wholly different levels of panic. You do have to be your own advocate though if you suspect something is wrong.

Thanks for the input Janelle. I definitely know googling isn’t the best idea but I was curious was these lab results meant, leading me into to reading way more than I should have. I’m definitely speaking to my doctor, hopefully today. I’m attempting to not worry but that can be difficult for sure. I’m hoping this is dietary and not a sign of significantly decreased kidney function. Time will tell.

I can tell you that my cholesterol went up significantly–normal at first for most on keto prior to a nice steady decline–however I’m what’s called a hyper responder, meaning mine did just the opposite and went up and stayed up (which I comically chronicled in my youtube vlog). I spoke to my doctor about it and he’s not concerned because all my other markers are excellent–pattern A for ldl, low triglycerides, perfect hdl to tri’s ratio, etc. Plus excellent blood pressure. You are doing the right thing by staying on top of your results and talking to your doctor. I personally really don’t know anyone who has been hurt healthwise from following a keto diet.
