Coming off Keto....temporarily

(Steve S) #1

Hi guys!

My wife has planned a family vacation to Disney. Yay! But wait… I’m gonna have to eat stuff. So, I imagine during this time I’ll do a horrible job Keto-ing.

Can anyone share some advice on what to expect coming off Keto? Does it make me sick? Can I / Should I do it slowly? If it’s only for a week, will I get the Keto-Flu again when I get back on the diet?

Any information is helpful.

Thank you in advance! Steve.

I have never been to a restaurant where I could not find a healthy ketogenic meal, albeit sometimes skipping a side or not eating the rice pilaf that the salmon was sitting on.

If you fully restock your glycogen stores then yeah, you’ll gain a good bit of weight (water) and will have to go back through the re-adaptation.

Someone else here recently went on a Disney Vacation and remained keto. Try searching Disney. If you have a decent fasting muscle, that would help a lot.

If you renamed this “staying keto at Disney” you’d probably get a ton of recommendations.

As others have said, I’d be surprised if you had to start eating crap again. Having been to Disney twice with my family, I don’t see why you’d have to stop.

How long have you been on Keto/LCHF? Can you easily skip meals now? Does carbage still tempt you?

Thank you for the responses… Looks like everyone is telling me the same thing!

When I wrote this post, I felt that because it was vacation, I would probably stop and enjoy some of my favorite food of the past. See, I’m living in Japan, but going back to America for a short time. I’ve been here for about 8 years, and for years I’ve wished for my old favorite spots… .A decent REAL steak house, a Taco Bell, a Chinese Buffet, some good old fashioned Macaroni and Cheese, some Pumpkin Pie, Carrot Cake, a fully loaded baked potato… These things I’ve always missed, and going back to the states will be a perfect chance to enjoy them again.

But, after reading everyone’s similar response, I realized that just because I’m going doesn’t mean I have to go off Keto. I can taste ALL of that stuff without actually ruining what I’ve achieved so far. I expected different info from you guys, but the info I got seems to be what I needed.

To answer the questions, I’ve been on Keto since August. I usually only eat twice a day, generally in the afternoon and late evening. However, skipping one of THOSE meals is not easy for me. No, I’m not usually tempted by non-Keto. Sometimes I’ll smell PIzza, and know that it’s delicious, and I miss it, but I’ve never even thought about having any. Many times my family eats pizza right in front of me while I enjoy a Johnsonville and Cheese.

Well, that was quite a wall of text. Apologies!

Best Regards,
Steve.

Weirdly, I’ve never liked pizza (or Italian in general, really). But I do quite like Fathead pizza. And cabbage-leaf lasagna.

Hey Steve,

I have a feeling you’ll be just fine. Sometimes the anticipation is worse than what you actually find when you get there. Most of the time, even if you can’t stay keto, there are less bad options that will not be awful. You’ve been around long enough to have an idea of what things are green light, what things are red light and what things are more of a yellow light. You might even find that things in the red light category might not taste as good as you remember… or, you might also find that just a tiny bit of whatever it is might feel like enough way before you anticipated. Tastes can change over time.

Good luck!
