Cold weather is kicking my butt!

Or at least that’s what I think is doing it. I have been SO tired for the past three days and just feel general “yuck”. But 95% of the yuck I think is from being so dog-tired. Any other Connecticutians suffering from this cold spell? I’ve lived here all my life but this one is really severe… pipes in my shower are frozen.

Never mind - think I answered my own question: I think I’m having keto flu. Honestly, I feel so physically sick that I’ve been taking my temperature and can’t believe I don’t have a fever!

I didn’t experience much (if any) keto flu when I started this 7 weeks ago but it seems maybe having ingested a bunch of bad carbs for 2 days during Christmas is making me pay now. Didn’t think I’d get the flu from getting right back on track but something is making me feel like crap.

It may not even be keto but some lousy bug you picked up along the line somewhere. That’s always a possibility especially at this time of year.

I never even consider that - I can’t remember the last time I’ve had a cold or flu or cough, nose-blowing, etc. Maybe I’m one of those unique people who just feels like crap without any outward symptoms.

Since going keto I haven’t had a bad cold. But my wife is a school teacher and she is frequently catching minor colds with sniffles and coughs. Typically 2 or 3 days after she is showing signs of a cold I’ll see my blood sugar rise 10 points and my ketones fall by half. And for a day or two I’ll tire quickly. And that’s it. I realize I’ve been catching the colds and shaking them off with scarcely any of the typical symptoms I previously suffered in spades.

You’re right that it doesn’t usually get this cold here. I remember only one winter (December 1979?) when it got down to around five degrees (that’s -15, for you Antipodeans) in the Trumbull area; usually it doesn’t get more than a few degrees below freezing. But this winter seems to be aiming for the same territory, and right now the thermometer is reading eight degrees (-13), brrrr!

But there’s also a bug of some kind going round, because my sister’s been sick for about a week, and now it looks like my turn. Hope you feel better soon! In the meantime, KCKO.

I guess I should always stop searching and obsessing over WHY specifically I’m not feeling well and sometimes just chalk it up to “I must’ve caught something.” I am forever on a mission to fix every little thing that’s wrong with my body so am always looking for WHY it happened so I can prevent it from happening again. Unrealistic, I know.

I work with people every day who sometimes casually mention that they feel like crap or that they “must’ve picked up a bug” and they just dismiss it and don’t give it another thought. I’m often envious of them.

Maybe that will be a new year’s resolution: everything doesn’t HAVE to have a reason, or if it does, you don’t ALWAYS have to know what it is.

Feel better soon, Paul
