Coconut oil heartburn?

(Allie) #1

Has anyone found that coconut oil causes them heartburn? I’ve been trying to figure it out for a couple of weeks now and have figured out it only happens on days where I have two fatty coffees rather than one, and the only thing I have in coffees that I never have at any other time, is coconut oil.

I’m going to try making them without it for a while and see how I get on…

That would be too bad, if true. Do you use a blender? If not, that might help. If it turns out that coconut oil is the offender, you might try MCT powder instead. Or add other things along with it to help buffer and/or thin it: like butter, whipping cream and/or whey.

You could do a definitive test: eat a tablespoon of coconut oil on an empty stomach.

Yes I blend it. These coffees have been a daily thing for me over the last four years and this is a new issue so something must’ve changed somewhere :slightly_frowning_face: it’s been coffee with butter, heavy cream, coconut oil and salt - I’m going to try just having the butter, cream and salt for a few days…

I have the same issue with avocados sadly, as I do love the taste. Never had the issue pre-Keto. But now if I eat avocado I have fierce heartburn.

The weirdest thing for me was that I used to take Omeprazole for years. When I started Keto I had terrible hearburn and thought I wasn’t going to be able to tolerate a high fat diet.
I think it was in a Dr Ken Berry video that he said ‘do not take a PPI, you need your hydrochloric acid to break down fats and meat, that is what hydrochloric acid is for’. I stopped my Omeprazole and didn’t have another bout of acid reflux again! Who knew, it was carbs and low fat giving me grief all the time!:slightly_smiling_face:

Incidentally, I usually only use coconut oil in curries, so I guess its hard to tell! But, when I started Keto I used to make BPC with MCT oil and it made me feel quite peculiar until I got used to it!

I was taking that twice daily pre keto @CrackerJax but keto totally cleared things up and I’ve had no issues since, until recently which is why I’m trying to work out what it is. Maybe my body just doesn’t want coconut oil anymore after four years of almost daily use, who knows. Tomorrow I’ll have coffee with cream, butter and salt and see what happens.

I does seem weird to have happened 4 years in. Maybe get yourself checked out - it may not be Keto related.:slightly_smiling_face:

It’s not keto related, it’s some weird reaction my body is having. Intolerances can flare at any time I guess. I’ll stop the oil and see what happens, doctors are always the absolute last resort for me

Since you’re already using a mix, it occurred to ask whether or not you recently changed brands of one or the other ingredient. Different brands of the same stuff often have slightly different components and/or proportions.

If it turns out that coconut oil is the problem, again I recommend my definitive test to confirm, then possibly you could switch to coconut cream. Less fat, of course, but maybe not irritating and would give you some of the benefits of coconut oil. This one has a fairly decent nutritional profile (ie 3 gr carb and 20 gr of fat per 90 grams). I used it before I eventually switched to whipping cream. I still use coconut oil as well as MCT oil without issues.

Same brand I’ve been using for the last six months at least, I get it so regularly it’s on monthly subscription with Amazon - well it was, I’ve just cancelled it.

I’ll have a look into options. It’s been discussed on here before how coconut cream here in the UK is a very different product to coconut cream elsewhere so I’ll have to do some digging

I don’t drink coffee with coconut oil, but I do get heartburn from coffee without cream on an empty stomach. But I drink espresso as a rule though in 4-6oz amounts. I imagine coconut oil would affect me the same as black coffee in that way. I can just eat a spoonful of coconut oil on an empty stomach without issues. Maybe you should try that to see if you truly can’t tolerate coconut oil or if it’s the combination with coffee that’s causing the heartburn.

Tomorrow morning I’ll make a fatty matcha instead of coffee :grinning:

:slightly_smiling_face:I hope you feel better soon.

My first thought is potential allergy developing (although I hope that’s not the case). I didn’t realize years ago that reflux and heartburn can signal food allergies, but it was the first symptom I had developed with peanut butter (after years of eating it problem free), if it is an actual allergy developing, chances are it will get worse if you continue to consume whatever the culprit is…
